Don't worry, it won't. The alternator is one of those low-tech parts that are practically built the same since forever. If you got a nice quality replacement one you're good.

Just to add a bit more info, I've got a 2005my 996tt, and am having a problem where the battery is not staying charged properly.

I think it's the alternator or regulator thats at fault due to the voltage dropping to about 12.0v after driving for 20 mins or so, which is not enough to keep the battery charged.
I'm going to try replacing the regulator first though as I've found a genuine Bosch one on Ebay for £24.

I removed the alternator at the weekend and it had the following numbers

Bosch 150A
Bosch part number 0 124 525 057
Porsche part number 997.603.012.01

Yes thats right my car had a 997 alternator from new, it has late 04 date stamps on it so i'm pretty sure its the original.

and the regulator said
Bosch F 00M 145 225

I couldn't find the reg listed for Porsche but it was for VW,Seat,Audi and Ford

It also has the one way clutch pulley

I'll let you all know if the new reg fixes it,if it ever arrives

My battery is dead on my 2005 porsche carrera 4s and I've tried using the terminal in the fuse box to get the engine compartment open so I can boost it but when I try this I can only get the switch for the front compartment to open. What can I do??

Buy a charger that charges from the 12v lighter socket. The oem porsche charger works like that but an aftermarket one should charge it fine as well.

Pop the front hood.
The battery sits in the front.
Charge the battery, or boost while being hooked up at the battery.

No need to boost in rear unless you have too short cables and can't reach the battery.

The fusebox terminal feeds all power devices, no need to go via 12V outlet. If your rear lid doesn't open you have other issues/adjustment, or blown fuse or similar.

Not at all. Just in the center of the car, in front of the windshield, you got a plastic panel with two wing screw. Just turn these wing screw together 1/4 turn and lift the complete plastic cover. The battery is under.

Isn't the 05 C4S a 996? If so, the engine compartment does have some terminals to jump start/charge. However it really doesn't matter if it's a 996 or 997, battery is in the same place in both and easy to get to. Maybe you should get an owner's manual and check it out.

awesome I got it all figured out. This is my first Porsche to be working on so I'm trying to watch my steps! And I actually found out boosting it straight from the battery is better than from the terminals...But why are the electronics being a little whacky and the abs failure lights comes on now?

If you drove it for a good while (went on a highway) and it's absolutely DEAD:
1) Charge your battery overnight with a 12V outlet charger or a direct to the battery charger. If it's dead after that the battery is toasted.
2) If the battery is fine, it's the alternator. It's not rare for it to go bad.

On a simlar note, I forgot to unplug my GPS and radar detector from the cigarette lighter and the car died. It had zero power and I could not open the front hood or engine hood either. I used this very helpful guide: http://perryandcoblog.com/2009/11/17...hood-solution/

to "jump the fuse box" to open the front hood (for some reason the rear lid would still not open, then jumped the battery directly and it fired up right away. I then drove about 10 minutes to the post office, thinking this would be ok, but when I came back out, the car was completely dead again and had to call AAA again (they do come in handy!). This time, we had to have the jumpers attached to the battery with the AAA truck reving at 3k rpm for about 5 mintutes before the Porsche got enough juice to start up. I drove for 40 minutes after that, and all is well again now, so it seems my alternator is still fine .

The other thing I noticed during this is that my car has a smaller battery than stock I think, since some ******** prior owner was cheap probably. It's not been a issue before though, so I'm not inclined to get a bigger battery unless there is a problem.

Well a new regulator fixed my problem, I now have a constant 14V at the battery and the car is transformed,it starts so much better and I no longer have to put it on the charger every night.

It's also fixed my cd changer which had been struggling to find discs

OK. i read the tread and am still struggling. I have a new battery and its is still dying ... had the alternator tested at Advanced Auto ... they said it is putting out low voltage ... not enough to keep the battery charged ... and needs to be replaced .... can i just replace the voltage regulator / diode pack OR do i need to replace the alternator?

Also, i am having trouble figuring out what the appropriate part number is for the diode back .... FOOM-145-225 from the pelican parts forum does not seam to be a valid part number and if I need an alternator, if i need one with the pully.

Thx!
