996 battery Died - questions
I went out to start my turbo this morning and it wouldn't start. It has enough juice to run the stereo/lights/etc but not to turn it over. I've heard you have to be careful jumping these cars so I just wanted to make sure. Anyone have advice for me - thanks

Happened to me couple of months ago. Pop the hood while your battery still has enough juice to do so, gain access to the battery by removing the black plastic cover, and then just jump start the car like you would with any other car.
If you haven't already, invest in a battery maintainer, especially if you rarely drive the car or only drive it for short distances. These cars seem to drain the battery quickly when not driven. Porsche sells a battery maintainer that plugs into the cig lighter opening/

There are actullay two places to connect batteries to if you are going to jump the car. The first is obviously the battery...but the second is on the engine. You will see a black plactic cover with a "+" sign. The cover will pop off. The neg can go to the latch mechanism. I had to have AAA out to jump my car once and he showed me the second jump point. He mentioned that Porsches are very difficult to jump when dead. You can typically find an exact fit Bosch replacement battery at either Pep Boys or Autozone for about 1/2 of what the dealer wants for a genuine Porsche battery. To be safe, I always take the battery with me to measure and ensure that the terminal connections are on the correct side.

How long ago did you start it last time?
My alternator died a couple months ago, I didn't experience any problem jumping just do it as follows:
1) connect jump cables from your car to a car with a running engine
2) let the running car charge your battery for about ~10min
3) disconnect and try to start
If it doesn't start - your battery is toasted.
If it starts and while you're driving the voltage meter starts going lower and lower - your alternator is toasted.
If it starts and you're driving and the voltage meter shows ~14V it means the alternator is good, drive around for at least 15-20min and you should be good.

if the battery is older than 3-4 yrs, i would replace it. jump starting may work but you'll end up replacing the battery soon since its already weak. new battery should be $45-60 at walmart, auto supply stores. they are all made by johnson control. iirc, it's group 48.
