Tires / Matching & Height

Tires / Matching & Height
I have Hankook, summer tires that came with my car. Front 225/40 ZR18 and 295/30 ZR18 Rears. My front tires have a lot of tread, rears not so much. Can I use a different brand on the rears for now? Thinking of the Bridgestone Potenza or PS2's. I don't want to change all four at this time if possible. New to me car and I've already dumped a bunch of $$$. Rather spend other places if I can. I now have winter tires and rims on. Nokian 235/40 and 395/35
I rub entering my subterranean garage, no width to angle better. I already changed my spoiler lip to a CS4. A half inch, more and I would clear. How does tire height come into play. I don't know anything about it. Will I be higher with the 225/40 I have?
While enjoying my new car, I regret selling my 1980, 930 4 years ago. I looked to buy another and the cost has doubled from what I sold it for. That's how I ended up with a 996.

I don't see why you couldn't go with a different brand, I am in the same situation like you know, next week I will go to buy some tires.
ps. I've send you a PM a few weeks ago, did you read it?

I have been runing different brands (front and rear) for awhile. Go to Tire Rack and lookup the spec of your current tires; what you want to look at is the Overall Diameter; then check the Overall Dia. of the new tires that you're getting. You want to get them as close as possible (up to about .3" differences). Tire Rack has a good collections of data; but sometimes you need to go directly to the tire company websites to find the specs.
There was a big long thread about it...

Personally, I wouldn't run different front/rear tires. At best I'd want similar tread patterns, but the tread compounds could be an issue too.
Just replace the 2 rears with the same tires and you'll be fine.

Yep...that's what I've been using:
Front: 225/35/19 Yokohama AD08 but running 15mm front spacers to get better track without necessitating 235 wide front tires
Rear: 315/25/19 Michelin PS2
The tire diameters are exactly the same! No front diff issues here.

HI,Contrary to believe and all that has been written about maching dia. sizes......Which most of it has been theory.....I have personally ran 25.9 rear dia. and 25.4 front dia. tires for 20,000 miles, taken 2,000 mile road trips, gone 185 mph numerous times, gone 150 mph for many miles at a time, been on the dyno many times AND never had a failure......I am not saying it will never happen if you go way out of wack but I know .5 inch has not caused anything to happen.I have stated this in many past threads.I have talked to many Porsche mechanics on this topic and many PCA members who do this also..I have not SEEN nor heard of any failures from .5 inch tire dia. differences.....Just my info, that I am passing on.......Good Luck

I'm with you on that one John. I ran over 10,000 miles with my front tires were .5" larger than the rear. I reached over 100 often with that setup, and hit 170 once. So far, the differential is okay (knocking on wood). For a peace of mind, I just changed the rear tires to the exact same size.

Hi,Thats a big part of it,,Peace of mind.....All I want to do is inform the members that I have done it,like you and most of the threads are on theory..If and when a drive shaft coupling system goes out on our cars, the first thing everyone assumes is it has to be a tire mismatch.....Have a great day.....

Unless there's some huge reason to go with different tires, why switch tire brands/tread patterns? You're going to switch out all 4 anyway once the fronts wear out the next time (when the rears will be done too). I just don't understand why you'd switch just the rears at any point.

I can't get the hankook in 295/35 18's here anymore.
