Question High pitch whine?

I'm hearing a high pitch whine when caught in traffic and going up and down the revs in first. Start out in first go up to 15 MPH stay there for few seconds, get off the gas let the car come down to idle while in gear and there it is, a high pitch whine. As soon as I depress the cluch the sound is gone. Then when I repeat the above sequence of events is comes back. Does anyone have any idea what this is?

TIA.

If it's real loud and appears/disappears, it is probably the hydraulic pump near the oil spout in the back. Do a thread search.

My hydraulic pump went at about 12K miles and made the same exact sound you are describing. It was replaced under warranty.

Here is the theard that I found which seems to identify what I'm hearing:

I'll contact my dealer and see what he says.

Thanks!

Rob:

It's funny. After putting on my Europipe, I noticed that when I downshifted to second gear there was a very high pitched whine was very noticeable (particularly when I did not have the music on). When I put the clutch in the get out of second gear, the sound goes away immediately. There was a post a few months ago that basically said there was a piece in the chassis or something that would resonate based on the RPM/gearing of the car. This resonance would produce a high pitched whine that would go away when you put the clutch in and the RPM's came down. I searched for the thread but couldn't find it...

Maybe the techie's on the board can weigh in (cjv, kpv, etc)

I have an '04, and I've noticed the high pitched whine since almost the beginning. Above descriptions apply to me too. Whine always stops when clutch is depressed, but will start up again soon. I don't really know when I'll get the whine; it's not all the time. At an early service, about a month after buying, I mentioned the whine, and the service writer at the dealer said it was normal.

Well, after speaking to a few different folks I keep hearing the same thing, "it's normal". If it's "normal" whatever that means, I guess my car isn't falling apart so I'll sleep well tonight. But I'm still going to the dealer and asking them WTF is going on. Maybe they'll "give" me a new car!! Yea, and mokey's might fly out of Larry's butt too!!

Its just transmission noise, just think of house fast everything in the transmission is moving at 3k rpms in first gear.
