Check out the homepage of the Nuerburgring (link to english version of nuerburgring.de). Note that the first big pic you see on that page (which is labeled "The Nürburgring") only shows the relatively small Grand Prix circuit, but not the famous "Nordschleife".
@MetalSolid: I'm not even sure whether that blue/orange 996 really was a true GT3.

The "Gulf style" GT3 is a real one.

If anyone wants to learn more about the "Nordschleife" and the Nuerburgring, check out this "nuerburgring for dummies" guide. It contains everything you might want to know... and even more. The author also has a good write-up about the 996 Carrera in it.
Here's an excerpt from that guide, which will make you hungry to read the whole thing - ...and to go there yourself!
Despite masterfully winning a Formula One race there, Jackie Stewart dubbed it "The Green Hell". For those who know of it, the Nürburgring Nordschleife (or Northern Loop) is the Mecca of racing enthusiasts. Nestled among the Eifel mountains of western Germany, this 13-mile track has stood as the ultimate test of driver and machine since its construction in the late 1920's. It is arguably the most difficult and dangerous track anywhere in the world--and it's open to the public! God bless the Germans.
This magnificent track features sweeping curves, variable surfaces, dramatic climbs and drops, and a back straight over a mile long. There truly is nothing like it anywhere else in the world. There are other tracks, but there is only one Nürburgring.

Exactly. But today, they not only opened the "Nordschleife", but also the Grand Prix Circuit. I took a 6 laps ticket for 80 Euros (around 60 USD) and it was well worth every penny.
Dozens of P-cars..., but absolutely no SLs, just one Gallardo and no Ferrari. Seems like a Porsche-only track.

Marx,
How far do you live from Nurnburg? Do you go to the city much? I used to be stationed there in the early eighties while I was with the 2nd ACR and lived in Merrel Barracks. Merrel Barracks used to be a **** officer school or something like that because it was a pretty stout place to live in. It had the bullet holes and machine gun patterns all over it from WWll. About two blocks down the road was a park that Hitler use to have his parades and is the place where you see the huge swastikas being blown up in the old WWll flicks. I used to watch the races there when they had them and thought that was a blast. Do you think you can take some pictures of Merrel Barracks and the surrounding area? Those were probably the best days in my life. Miss it.

@Wardhog: You actually confuse Nuerburg with Nuernberg. This happens pretty often. Here's a quote from the guide I linked above (note the second part of it):
Nuerburg is actually a super small village with only a couple of people living there, while Nuernberg (where you were) is a by far bigger city.
I know both places... and they're both very nice. I live around 400 km away from Nuerburg and around 700 km away from Nuernberg. Unfortunately I don't have any pics of the city... but if I ever get to Nuernberg again, I'll look out for the Merrel Barracks and try to take a couple of pictures for you.
@Pierre: The weather was fantastic. Way better than it was originally forcasted for that day. Do you visit the ring often? Maybe we could meet there some day...
You'll find the track sometimes written without the umlaut over the first 'u' (i.e. "Nurburgring") or sometimes with the 'u' replaced by 'ue' (i.e. "Nuerburgring") as this is a phonetic spelling of the word when the 'ü' can't be written (like in US-ASCII, used for URLs). Most just call it: the 'ring.
The ring itself is located in around the Nürburg castle in the town of Nürburg. It's one of many small towns in and around the 'ring. Nurburg is located in northeast Germany and should not be confused with the famous Nürnberg, in the south (Bavaria), which was the site for the trials by the same name at the end of World War II.

The Nurburgring is in beautiful country side, the road going from the highway is a nice windy and smooth road. There is a nice museum at the track as well. It is well worth a stop whether or not you are going to drive it.
