Definitive drive cycle to reset?
#16
FYI, after replacing the alternator in my 996c4, followed multiple failed tests due to catalyst not being ready -- even after driving 250 miles -- I followed this cycle more or less and passed. Thanks.

Start engine, idle cold for approx. 2 min, 10 secs.
Accelerate to 20-30 MPH, Maintain steady speed for approx 3 min, 15 secs.
Accelerate to 40-60 MPH, Maintain steady speed for approx 15 mins.
Decelerate and come to a stop. Idle in gear* for approx 5 mins.
Can't think of any place where I could just drive 60 mph for 15 minutes without a stop sign or other slow down. According to the above criteria, if the engine goes above 3k RPM or above 60mph, you have to start over.
Any help or input? Has anyone passed emissions soon after service without going through the above?
Thanks!!

me too. that "reset protocol" is the same as bmw. it is sometimes difficult to maintain those careful speeds for the protracted length of time and it has to be fairly strictly followed to reset all to "ready". in fact, i had to do it the second time at about 430 am so as not to be hampered by traffic

Sorry to revive this but can someone confirm if this all has to be done strictly chronologically (i.e. cold idle, followed immediately by 20 mph, then 60 for 15 mins all on the same drive)?
Or can it be done piece by piece?
Thanks

it's definitely, one drive cycle but it's tricky. i screwed it up once and had to wait for 4am to be able to maintain those speeds/revs without traffic around.
if you dont pass the reset on first try, just take it again like a driving test lol

I just had to do this on my 996. Pre-planned a route and followed the above instuctions...and it worked first time. From what I read, once you get into the long cycle just make sure you don't go over 3000 rpm and 60 mph. I had previously driven 200 miles at highway speeds and the monitors did not reset. Also, I read that you don't have to do the steps chronologically since each step tests a certain part of the emission monitors...but I've never confirmed this.

What worked for me after trying for many months, was to let the car idle 25 minutes in the morning after sitting overnight.
Mixed driving on the street and freeway, and a week later PASS!!!

What's the easiest way to know if it's ready? I just bought a 996TTS, took it for emissions and was told its not ready, bring it back (I had just cleared the CEL, I didn't know about the ready thing). I then had my shop do the plugs and coils to get rid of the CEL. Drove it for about 100 miles, mixed driving on and off highway. Took it back to my shop who put it on their tester and told me it was ready (they dont do stickers). I took it back to the emissions place that gave me a rejection sticker, and they told me it's still not ready.
I have a bluetooth OBD2 + Torque Pro. Will that or another tool tell me if it's 'ready'?

may as well shake the magic 8-ball trying to reset these cycles from what I can tell. I just drive the car everyday to work and back and for all my errands for the week before emissions and they always reset.

their obd2 readout only reports which of the "readiness monitors" are in "ready" mode ( or not ) and there are about 5 or 6 that all need to show "ready". thats what you need to determine. in my extensive and hair pulling experience most recently, the most difficult one to get to set back to "ready" ( think twice before running catless ( off road, of course.. ) then re-installing to go get smogged..) is the "catalyst monitor" staying in "not ready". that one's a bi*ch. the others ( SAI/02's/evap etc ) all fall into "ready" pretty easily if you do the reset properly. as of this date, the only ONE now allowed to be "not ready" and still allowable to pass smog cert in Kali is the "evap". they used to allow for 2, now only the evap, since that could be just a bad gas cap causing the not ready.
