996tt vs 997tt
#4
I was just at the Porsche garage last week as I have been considering buying a 997 Turbo to replace my 996 Turbo and the salesman himself said that there wouldn't really be much difference! Sitting inside there isn't much difference (996 doors way nicer haha) either lol.
I was pretty shocked when he said that to be honest, would expect more of a sell! But still I would really like to know from those who have driven both to see how much different it is, especially mapped versions of each.

997.1 has variable geometry turbos and puts out more power. If you are going to just tune and exhaust it is definitely better than the 996tt due to bolt ons. The 997.2 has a 3.8l motor and pdk. Without a tune or exhaust it is faster than a tuned 996tt or 997tt. But if you plan on going to much bigger power, then there is no need to upgrade.

3.6l, 475bhp, auto transmission.
My choice is to either go for that or tune my 996 turbo, though I don't want to spend too much because of cash spent tuning not being recoupable in future sale values, so I suppose just a comparison with a stage 1 or stage 2 tune package is what i'm interested to learn about.

The salesman speakith the truth. Sure the 997.2 is faster and, as all evoultions of 911/TT, better. But I believe the cost of the new car vs. your 996TT and what you may have modded already will greatly overshadow the differnce in performance/other you may see in the 997.2. Just my .02.

Since the stock power differences is just 50 hp between the 3 and many say the 3.6 is a better motor, if modded moderately ( dv, tune, exhaust, headers, intercoolers, wastegates, y pipes etc) the x50 should be able to keep with even with the pdk.

The 07-09 997TTs have better airflow, different cams, and a better stock fuel system. Mod for mod, the 997TT will be quicker until you reach the limit of these differences.
The 2010- PDK Turbos are limited thus far by the transmission. Until this is resolved, we won't see the 4 or 5 second 60-130 passes consistently.

A 2010 PDK Turbo gets to 200 km/h in about 10.5 seconds. I don't think you'll get there in a 996TT X50 with the mods you listed...even if you do make up the 50hp difference, there is a lot more involved in the new turbo's acceleration.

It is all in the PDK tranny. Speed of shift and gearing is too much to make up for in HP alone.

It was a stock 997.1 I was looking at, I believe so anyway - it was this one:
3.6l, 475bhp, auto transmission.

Good looking car. However, a 997.1 turbo does not have pdk so that means a tiptronic and that is a deal killer for me. I know the turbo's are better and I know the intake setup is a bit better, but all that can be replaced in the 996. Knowing what it is, unless you are going to use it in traffic as a DD, I would not bite on it.

It's more than PDK. In single gear runs, a 2010 997 Turbo out accelerates its predecessor with nearly identical gear ratios. Based on tuner dynos, the power difference is significantly more than what is on paper.

well, of course it does. It has 0.2 Liter more displacement which obviously will give it more power under the curve. I don't think it is the peak power that will help in the single gear run, but I am sure it has a broader curve throughout the range which will give it more acceleration in a single gear run.
