AWD versus RWD on the track.

I can see this is not the place to have a technical discussion, fact seems to be clouded by opinion. Perhaps I should start some threads about how shiny my car is and which set of chrome 22's I should get.

Ben, you can't make such a comparison because so much about the cars are unequal. If you took a C2 and made it AWD AND everything was the same INCLUDING THE POWER TO WEIGHT RATIO, I would suspect the AWD version would do the same track faster. There are too many variables between the TT, C2 C4, etc that effect their track performance to really get more than just opinions on "what if's".

is it really an embarrassment or is it more a reflection of the target market and use for the car?

you know chad, i should always put an "excluding the $500k 1200 hp KA TT on it's 2nd or 3rd engine which spends 90% of it's time down and has questionable street legal status" in my statements. iow, yours is so far the exception that it doesn't invalidate the rule.
fwiw, depending on when, where and the details, i'll try to make it out with the bone stock CGT to the next one. that said, don't plan on my being willing to melt my $25k clutch for drag race testing though.

Besides, this isn't a do or die situation for me. It won't be the first time I've been beat. It will be interesting to see how a home grown turbo does in comparison to Weissach's current best. For the sake of your 25K clutch let's forget about the quarter mile and concentrate on the twisties and braking. I'm still game. If I lose, I take you to dinner and we have a good time.

I hate when people use the term "a true sports car is RWD" or " a true sports car is" whatever. Did you ever see those big semi trucks race? I'll bet many of them could smoke our cars around the track.
A "true" sports car should be whatever the hell you want to race around the track and whatever technology you want to use while doing it.
In my opinion, these arguments are the same as arguing about religion. That's what I hate about religion. All this "my team is better than your team" attitude bores me.

It's really just personal taste - both drivetrains can be very fast around the track.

RWD is better because the front wheels are already busy turning and braking. Have you guys ever heard of a traction circle? The idea is that there is only so much grip that the tire has to offer, you can spend it either turning or accelerating/braking. if you're turning as hard as possible using 100% of available traction you can not accelerate or brake at the same time or else you'll exceed the available traction. to accelerate you have to stop turning at 100% and turn at 90% instead which would free up 10% for acceleration... another way i've heard this explained is if you imagine a shoe string connecting bottom of the steering wheel to the gas/brake pedal. If you push the pedal to the floor, the wheel has to be straight, you let off the pedal and you can now turn the wheel a little, let off more and turn some more. That's why you don't see AWD in road racing - rally is a different story since often they don't race on tarmac and grip is much harder to find.
