DIY clutch accumulator install questions

I am considering replacing the clutch accumulator on my 2003 996 Turbo. My car is stock with 8k miles. The clutch is rock hard on cold start up, and vague and rubbery when running.

I understand that there is limited working space, and it is difficult to tighten the new accumulator.

There have been posts about modifying a 27mm open wrench.

My questions are: Does the wrench need to be shorter? Or does the wrench need to be thinned out at the end? Is there a better way to tighten the accumulator?

Here's a pic from Danyol's very helpful DIY accumulator write-up:

Thanks,
Dean

That's a picture of mine. Look at the bend I did to facilitate the job.... Also I had to shave it down to .250 (1/4").

I followed one of the recommendations on this list (gearhead, perhaps) who suggested using an oil filter wrench (strap type). My accumulator was not on terribly tightly and it took very little torque from the filter wrench strap. Certainly worth a try before grinding down a tool.

jpflip and tbarcelo,

great ideas. The strap wrench seems like it could work, but I read that the accumulator needs to be tightened hard.

The torqued should be 22.2 foot pounds or 266 inch pounds.... My accumulator was probably over torqued. Modified open end wrench was the only way....

thanks. I'll take the wrench to a local machine shop to make the modifications.

jpflip,

Do you think this will work:

27mm open wrench, 6.35 mm thick head (0.25 inches) with overall length 174mm (6.85 inches). I could angle it like you did with a propane torch.

I took a picture of a spare slave and accumulator, You will see exactly the space you have to work with. Hope this help. But I have to admit the wrench you have found is going to be perfect!

Yeah, keep us updated on how the work goes. Im about to replace mine too. My clutch feels vaguey and rubbery when running, so tell us if that problem goes away with the new accumulator or if we have to change the slave cylinder also? Mine is stiff when the cars not running.

I remember either getting a new accumulator or the old one being a different size nut. In any case the motor was out at the time so it was a non issue but maybe one for someone if its in the car. I order from worldpac, if they do not have it I go to the dealer. There is a O-ring seal on the accumulator so hand tight should not leak but will loosen with vibration.

Good reminder. In fact the first one I did about four years ago was 22 mm instead of the new one being 27 mm.

I have to mention the original part number was 996 314 166 00. It's been superseded by a 997 part number as per Pelican site. Which is now # 997-314-166-00 and of course the price went up to about $146.25

Bleed the accumulator first, pump the clutch pedal 10 or so times, you may need to bleed the clutch after.
