Clearing CEL's

I've been getting P1411 and P0410 CEL codes and am going to attempt swapping out my DV's tonight. I'd like te get this car smogged, and I was wondering if you guys knew if I'd have to clear the codes myself or if the codes would automatically reset if I drive the car around a bit. What do you guys think?

I'll let you know how it goes (if the problem goes away).

Thanks in advance.

First, for what reason you think it is the DVs? You can get a $50 OBD-II reader and most of them can clear codes. However, after you clear the codes, your car has to go thru a number of cycles (forgot the number) before it is invisible to the smog tech.

I've been getting P1411 and P0410 codes. Those almost always indicate a failed Diverter Valve. I'm just wondering if i don't reset the codes if they'll go off by themselves.

The manual says that these codes are from the secondary air injection system, one code is for bank one, the other for bank 2. Diverter valves do not appear in the list of possible faults, although I suppose a vacuum leak at the DV's is possible. Here is the list of possible causes from the manual:

♦ Secondary air injection pump is not triggered
♦ Secondary air injection pump does not work
♦ Air supply lines restricted
♦ Electric change-over valve does not function
♦ Air change-over valve does not function
♦ Vacuum system leaking

Thanks guys. I've done a great deal of research on on 6speed and rennlist and I've come to the conclusion that at least 90% of the time it's one of the DV's. Once it was actually the spark plugs...

I'm not worried so much about whether the fix is right. I'm more worried about verifying the fix and how to clear the CEL's before my smog test.

They will eventually clear, but could take many, many starts.

OTOH, if you clear the codes it will take a while for the readiness monitors to 'set'.

In case any google searcher ends up on this page, I replaced the DV's and the problems went away. I plan to have a more detailed writeup on how to make sure your readiness codes get set.

Thanks for all your help guys. 6speed is such a valuable resource!
