Is $54K High for a 2002 996TT?
#31
i think your best guide to current pricing may be right on this site. there are always several great twin turbos being hawked here, and for the most part they seem to be priced right on the mark. for example, someone just posted a 2002 tt with 18k miles, wheels and some modest mods and he's asking $47k and looking for the bid...which makes me think the one you are looking at could be priced as much as $10k off market. anyway, good luck in your hunt! if i were lucky enough to be looking for a tt i'd stay right here on 6speed....

I couldn't find a low mileage nice car with good options for under $60,000 so i decided to look for a 997 TT instead
I actually was interested in buying a TTS but dealers/owners haven't budge on their prices from $73,000 + and guess what, months later they still have those cars..
Look around as 997 TT with mid 20K milkes can be had for mid 70's so heck why spent 55 + 10 for mods for a 996 TT when you can have an 07 TT for 75.
I was dead set on finding a 996 TT until i test drove an 08 997 TT There's literally no comparison between the two cars.

I sold my X50 for $54K and had my target on a GT2 but just so that I didn't miss anything I drove some other cars including the 997TT but when I drove my current GT2 and the 997TT back to back on the same day and same conditions there wwas no comparison I was blown away, the GT2 is so visceral in-your-face like a violent raging mountain lion and the 997TT is a civilized house cat purring on your lap and occasionally hissing at you in comparison

also as sunir mentions, a VERY clean under 20k mileage, 07' 997.1 tt can't be found ( at least not in LA ) for under 85K, with some even asking 90k. there are a couple locally with 40/45k miles for about $75k, but they have been around the block, i would say. at least that's my recent experience and i'm looking for one also.
until i find one i will lament the loss of the best car i've ever had. i get ill just thinking about it

All good posts. I just bought my 03 single owner TT coupe with 27k miles on it. Basically a flawless car. for $51K out the door just last week (about $47K before tax/license). I have been shopping around a lot , and I know my car was not the 'best deal' out there, but i think i paid a fair price for it as it really is a near perfect car. Everyone that sees it thinks its a brand new car. I am really happy with the car so far. As I had been shopping around a lot , I think you could find a price abbout $10k lower if you were willing to spend a few days in LA. Ther are a ton of TT's for sale there and the prices are all over the place. For instance, my second choice was an 01 with 19K miles and the dealer was asking $44K and it was in LA. I was able to leverage that against the dealer to lower his price a couple thousand so i did not end up going to look at that car.
Good luck with your purchase ad make your decisions slowly and not at the dealership.

Scott

Just a data point (and that's all it is). I bought my 04 X50 Cab Tip in December of 2008. It had 54K miles, so high mileage, but an X50. Probably cheaper with the Tip but a little more since it was a Cab.
I paid $54K. 2 1/2 years ago. For an 04.

Here's some advice if you are willing to spend $50K+. Hold out for a really nice one with the mods you are looking for. Mods chew up $$ when you are paying for them. If someone else did them for you already you'll pay fifty cents or less on the dollar. Buy one from someone here! I wish I had.
depends on factors that OP needs to expand on...how flawless is the car? I think that '09 was the rock bottom for these cars...they are making a rebound....a local dealership just flipped a 30K mile X50 yellow coupe here for $58K ... and they had 2 offers on the car...
I think mid fifties for a clean car is not at all unreasonable...the whole mind stuck in the 40s paradigm is now shifting guys, these cars are getting legs in the used car market...more and more people are realizing how much car they are for the money and guess what, demand is going up and up while supply drops...you know what that does!

The asking price for this car seems OK, considering the car is sold at the dealer and provided the car in in pristine condition. After some negotiation, I can see it go for $49-$50 and I'd be willing to pay that for it if it was exactly what I was looking for.
Good luck, keep us posted.

i bought my stock '02 x50 from a large local dealership here in early '09, very clean, with 27k on the clock for $47k. i just received word from my insurance company that as a result of the car being written off due to a collision in which i was not at fault, i would be paid $59.8k, with 53k miles on the clock!
...

Also, agree with you and sunir, I've not seen any clean, well-cared-for 997.1TT with 20k-ish miles for "mid 70s." Mid-80s, yes. So, about a 30k premium over a very clean, similar mileage 996TT.

Sorry for your loss, but thanks for sharing your experience. The bolded part above is an excellent data point for those currently in the market. Insurance companies don't typically overpay for totalled vehicles, and have access to volumes of data to compile and calculate their estimate for fair market value.

I'm in the market as well. I am not sure what the OP is looking for as far as color, but every white colored 996TT I see has a premium of at least 10% on the price compared to similar cars of a different color. White really is difficult to find.

For whatever it is worth: Even though most are shopping for a 996 and trying to price check them, it is very difficult to do. It isn't as apple to apples as one might think. As stated earlier, condition of car, seller (private vs dealer), options (tip vs manual, popularity/demand for color, etc), CPO'd vs no warranty, aren't side issues, they are the main reasons for the pricing (demand). So many variables even though the core product is the same. BTW, I just purchased a 2007 997.1 TT. For the color and options I wanted plus wanting a CPO vehicle I could not find another in the couple of months I shopped for less than what I paid for mine ($84k with tiptronic 24k miles, cpo'd). If I did find a listing it sold within a day or two. Just food for thought.

I think based on market price like everyone said, you can talk them down. Go for the 47-48K mark. It's low miles which is great. If it's clean and is what you want then I think go for it if you can get it within that range. Good luck
