Need some sort of bra...
#16
thanks for all the responses - i really needed the help.
after just 4mos(when i got the new GT3 front bumper), the bumper looks like a mine field up close. most of the damage is done during our "spirited" mtn drives. the fenders surrounding the headlights are just starting to show some knicks upon close inspection so i don't want it to get worse.
no offense to clear bra owners BUT those lines would drive me crazy - moreso than the stone chips
the porsche bra covers all the areas I'm interested in so i was just wondering if there was another mfr that had a bra that covered the SAME areas(Speed Lingerie is great BUT they don't cover the fenders)
carbonissimo - that bra in the picture is perfect. you say it does not mar your paint but do you think that it's just not noticeable b/c your car is gray. mine is black so hairline scratches would show up alot easier than on your car. would you feel comfortable putting that bra on a black car for road trips???
i guess the BIG question is has anybody ever had/heard of the porsche bra scratching up a dark colored paint job??
thanks as always

I had a Porsche bra on my first C2, an Ocean Blue 996.
When I sold it, I dumped that bra for good.
I now have the 3M in the Stongard product form. It's 100x better.
I put it on my last C2, and on my current Turbo.
The Porsche bra did create issues with my paint. Primarily near the wheel wells where it 'grabs' the well.
Also, if you're drivin it and hit any water either on the road or rain, you better get it off ASAP or you'll get fogging that is not removable.
Lastly, they are speed rated to 120 mph or something, so if you track it, make sure you tape it down!

thanks for the heads-up Scott. I just called Sunset to go ahead and order the Porsche bra but after searching the computer, Jeff informed me that they no longer make the bras. He said that they don't make them for the 987/997's and don't plan to either He checked other dealer's inventory and nobody has a bra in stock.
OK, so Jeff mentioned maybe looking up Colgan and seeing what they had to offer but am leary after what Scott says.
1. Suck it up and repaint front bumper/possibly hood q2 yrs
2. Clear bra - Scott, what were the lines like on your dark paint?
3. Speed Lingerie & pray for no more fender knicks. Has anybody else noticed rock chips on their fenders near their headlights???
thanks

All you have to do is look at my front bumper from the Gallardo that was in front of me on our drive last week and look at Andrew's (DeputyDog) cab. Mine is sand blasted and his is nice and protected from the clear bra..

Why would that guy say that??? It totally protects it. That's the whole point!
Frank, the lines show more on dark paint, but it's still not too bad as long as your careful about how you wax and clean around the edges. When I wax my car, I put tape over the edges, so that I don't wax right up against the edge. Worst case scenario, I have been able to take a detailing brush and clean the edges at times.
Here's the thing, you will notice the line some, and it may bother you a little, but I would be willing to bet that you stop seeing it after a while and others will almost never notice unless they are inspecting your car.
Repainting over and over is an option, but you have to be careful. The risks are big there:
1) a bad paint job / not a good match in color which is a common problem
2) a repainted bumper or hood is a red flag to a new buyer and saying it was for rock chips doesn't necessarily make them feel better

I have a factory Porsche bra and it has scratched the S@%t out of my paint on the top of my fenders. Deputydog's 996 has the full 3M treatment and boy am I jealous. Talk with him about this, he has plenty of experience.
