New MAF

Hello,
I knew that the 996 Maf is very sensitive and prone to break so i bought the only one that was in stock at our porsche dealer in Beirut. The car is running well at idle ,partial and full throttle.Yesterday night i installed the new one and ran the car,i realized a huge difference specially 5500 to 7200rpm.

In other cars it is common to hear of issues with fouled MAFs that throw NO codes and result in NO issues, EXCEPT lower performance...change the maf and large step in performance.

Particularly true with oiled air filters.

While the DME will perform long term compensation via fuel trims for dirty mafs, short term dynamic response is reduced.

I rarely hear this on the 996TT forums. It is all about 'blown' mafs as ^Markski points out.

After replacing the MAF its not easy anymore to shift from 2nd to 3rd gear without hitting the rev limiter

Log your MAf and see what Kg/hour its doing... they map maxes out at 1600Kg/hour. Our after market does 2.5 times that... thus the range in tuning is within limits and you actually control what your doing in the mapping... otherwise it becomes "blind calibration" as some say... yet it still works fairly well in most cases....

Have tuners been somehow programming away from MAF failures? it seemed to be a very hot issue but we just don't see that many MAF issues lately. What's going on?

The 997T tranny or 1-3 gear shaft goes a long way to "help" the under geared 996 cars. Especially when they're putting out that much more power. The taller gearing helps you keep it in each gear longer.

long term, I'd love to add an LSD and the 997 gear ratios.

they seem to blow more often colder climates.. or fluctuating climates... with those pushing higher then usual HP... just my observation....

did anyone ever analyze what exactly is wrong with a blown stock MAF? I would like to understand what happens? I managed to break a MAF by cleaning it. why? currenty shows 1,0v at idle which is the common symptom of a blown MAF...

In the past I played with moving the maf to change how it would read the airflow it really only helped it live the MAP sensor pegs not to far after the maf so not really that big a deal to get it to read more airflow. Once the MAF is pegged the ecu uses MAP sensor and lambda once the MAP is pegged the ecu uses the lambda to switch between the maps for trims. There is nothing that is done in the dark here.
