Vibration damper stuck

Vibration damper stuck
I'm changing my brake pads today. On one of the fronts, the vibration damper in the larger piston is stuck. I was working on it for a while trying to loosen in and have now sheared the backing plate off. Now I have a naked damper inside the piston hole. Still stuck there.
Any ideas?

I can't picture this... The damper is flat and covers the hole completely, how did anything go in the piston hole? With the piston all the way in, it makes the surface almost flat, if something was in there couldn't you just get someone to press the brakes a bit while you watch closely - just tell them to stop when the blockage pops out.

It goes into the hole. It's about an inch deep. I'm guessing it's stuck against the face of the piston. Whatever it is it won't budge and I think it will be there until I take them apart for refinishing.
I'm going to take the screw out of the stuck piece and take the same piece off of the new damper. I'll put in the new one and then put the screw back in through the plate.
