True Bolt-on Turbos for K16 or K24, bang for the buck, your opinions/suggestions?

When I say true bolt-on, I am talking about the turbo itself (leaving stock manifold, stock exhaust bolt pattern, etc)

I haven't been particularly impressed with the first one I have driven. I'll be driving a couple this week, some with reflashes and exhaust, etc.

Back on topic....

I am looking for at least 550whp.

-K24/18 (600 crank?)
-K24/20

From what I can tell, these uses the stock K24, but have an upgraded/replaced compressor wheel (18g/20g) which will keep the same spool (K24 exhaust side does not change), but gives more mid/top end from the larger compressor wheel.

I haven't driven a K24 setup yet, so i am not sure what the lag is going to be like.

Do the K24/18 and 20 upgrades require upgraded fuel injectors, fuel pump, intercoolers? The reflash is obvious.

I think I'd be happy with 550whp for a little while, I'm sure I'll get the bug later and want more power.

Aside from the K24 upgrades, are there any other true bolt on turbo upgrades that will utilize the stock manifolds? If so, what are some recommendations from 996TT drivers?

Thanks!

Your true, bolt-on turbo upgrades, available at present (and as I understand them):

K16 modified into a K16/16g or a K16 "billet" (i.e. billet compressor wheel upgrade)
K24 modified into a K24/18g, K24/20g, or K24 "billet"
Tial Alpha A2868 billet turbo
Tial Alpha A3071 billet turbo
Tial Alpha A3076 billet turbo

There may be others as well... good luck in your search.

Our billet-compressor wheel K16 turbocharger offerings will support 600rwhp and spool as quick as the OEM turbo configuration, see below:

Thanks Neil.

I am looking for 550whp on 91 Octane, being conservative on the tune. This may be far fetched, but I've also considered an E85 conversion as E85 is readily available at several locations here in AZ.

dhahlen, 550rwhp on 91 sounds about right, e85 would allow you to max them out as far as power and airflow, may as well go to big turbos and big power

Yazz911TT - Why swap nearly 30 year old Mitsubishi compressor wheel technology onto the K16 when you can use the latest tech billet wheel technology turbocharger provided?

I would do headers and other mods that go with larger turbos since eventually you will want them any way (trust me on this one).

Doing everything at once is also much cheaper.

Thank's Neil, undecided if I want to drop a minimum of 10k for another 100hp. The first 100 is easy, after that is much more expensive.

Note, I've excluded exhaust mods. The car I am looking at already has headers/exhaust...

500whp - wastegate, dv, reflash ($2000)

600-650whp

Clutch - $2000
Fuel (pump, injectors, lines for e85) - $1500-2000
Turbos - $4500-5500 (much cheaper if you find them used)
Custom Tune - $1500-2000

Haha, never ends. I remember moving from 250 hp to 350, to 450 to 500, 600 then 750. Four years and several tens of thousands later, I wanted a different platform. Sigh....

Not that I am complaining, gotta pay to play.

if you are looking at the factory hybrid turbos, you are only looking at $2000 tops for turbos. I guess your figures include labor?

I am just throwing really rough prices out there.

I saw a set of K24's with 50lb compressor wheels for $2200 from a member here, he noted he made 650whp with them.

Labor wasn't included on the cost, but it could easily double the cost.

91 octane on a stock injectors 550 rwhp? not that easy.... 18gs or even k24 billets will run at max 1.1 bar on 91 octane.... with a 5 bar FPR.... you may get 530....
the K16 billets we sell on 91 octane will spool faster.... but you are never going to hit 550 rwhp on stock injectors, stock ICs, stock intake( airbox to turbos)..
k24/20gs are too big for both the stock intake and stock injectors....
E85 conversions are at least $2500 to $3500 in parts and labor... if not more...
our k24 18g hits 590awhp at 1.3 bar on a 5 bar fpr but thats on 100 octane....

I suggest you don;t start playing the dyno game and talk to a few members that know the sets up in question....
good luck,
markski

Thanks for the input.

Yeah, I think labor on a fuel system will be more than the parts. I am not sure what pumps most are using for E85, but the Bosch044's worked well for my RX-7 in a custom dual pump environment.

I'd be looking at an x50, so it would have the larger intercoolers, but from what I read, they're not much of an improvement. I wouldn't mind slapping in larger injectors, but I also read that the stock pump isn't good for it.

Of course, I am reading on a forum and it's typical that a lot of information is inaccurate. I'd give a reputable shop a call when I am ready to start throwing money at it for power. (not to discount what you said, I'm speaking generally)

I'll have a better idea of what a K16 slightly modded and flashed 996 is like tomorrow, perhaps I'll be ok with less power initially, there is always room to grow.

Saw your car and passed because of RWD conversion. However, your car seems to be setup in the same way I'd progress, minus the RWD conversion.

No problem, but plan on spending upwards of $20k on mods to get where I am...if you do most your own work. Takes about an hour and a half to put the front Diff and parts back in. Why do you need AWD in Arizona?
