Yeah, it's my guess that by doing this, they can claim glory when/if they beat the P1's, but if they lose to Audi and the rest, they can say, "Well, we're in a different class."

That way there's no 'losing' to Audi really.
Kinda weenie if you ask me, but it wouldn't surprise me, because sometimes I think Porsche seems to weenie out of a lot of things.
