"Operation Safe Canyons"
CA guys watch out. this taken from NBC news & also a f-chater... thanks for the heads-up.
CHP Unveils Traffic-Safety Program Targeting Illegal Street Racing
Authorities Thursday unveiled a traffic-safety program for the Santa Monica Mountains designed to target the problems of illegal street racing and other unsafe driving practices in the area near Malibu.
Dubbed "Operation Safe Canyons," the enforcement effort will be conducted by teams of California Highway Patrol officers and Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies, said CHP Officer Leland Tang.
"On weekends, there is an increase of recreational vehicles, motorcycles, high-performance vehicles and bicyclists using these roadways," Tang said. "This increase in vehicular traffic creates a higher than normal demand for service calls and enforcement."
Tang said that the area's mountainous canyon roads "provide an environment for some motorists to engage in high-speed racing and other unsafe driving practices."
He said an increasing problem has been the organization of illegal events by use of the Internet.
Among the problems in the area:
Motorcycles and other vehicles being driven recklessly on Mulholland Highway, past the residential community west of Decker Canyon.
Motorcycles and other vehicles racing on Stunt Road.
High-performance vehicles racing into the early hours of the mornings on Stunt Road and neighboring canyon roads.
Motorcycles and other vehicles traveling in the wrong direction on Tuna Canyon Road while driving in a reckless manner.
And various instances of motorists driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
"Our goal is to create and maintain an environment that promotes a safe and enjoyable use of the Santa Monica Mountains region for all," Tang said.
Also involved in the program will be Assembly Member Fran Pavley's office, Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky's office, the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office.

I was up in canyons today. Gorgeous day for driving. Bumped into JaykLA at the Stunt Rd overlook. We chatted a while and had a nice run. Saw LOTS of CHPs all over, practically swarming. We were expecting the additional enforcement and were both disciplined enough to know when to back off. One way to look at this is that the CHP officers are out there trying to make sure the roads are safe for us. I really don't think they're trying to stop the gatherings just tone it down a bit. Smart drivers will still enjoy the roads as we did today.
My personal strategy is to avoid high speed anywhere there is a hint of a straightaway, such as Mulholland Hwy at Cornell, Mulholland Hwy at Troutdale, all of Kanan, Las Virgenes, Mulholland Hwy just east and west of Kanan. Also, go s-l-o-w past the Rock Store (lots of bikers)...this is a safety and respect issue. Ditto for the overlook between the Rock Store and Kanan, more bikes there and people turning around on the short straight. Also you gotta stay on your side of the lines. This is a especially critical west of the Rock Store where the road is narrow, and trees, rocks and tight corners make for the many blind corners. I see more bikes going west to east, while most of the cars seem to prefer east to west. Bikes have much less of a safety margin with their small tire contact patches.
For me the fun is just to be out there with other enthusiasts, see the cars, hear the cars, make some noise and go home safe. Speaking of noise, I can testify that JayKLA's Fabspeed Loud exhaust is awesome in the tunnel on Kanan. We slowed down and then punched it though there just to enjoy the sound.
Stay safe and have fun y'all.

i was there saturday, covered about 40 miles of canyon roads and didn't see a single cop. not at TOW, Stunt, Rock star or any place. Las Flores is pretty much ruined thanks to mother nature. wouldn't mater for me as i always drive the speed limit and enjoy the view.

Hey Zed, it was a pleasure meeting you and always great to have another enthusiast along for a drive, especially when it's by chance. As Zed said there were tons of CHP's out, but if you know your limits and watch out, you should be fine. Anytime you wanna go for a run , let me know. And Zed, we need to get you a Fabspeed loud!
