Made the switch, M1 TDT!

Made the switch, M1 TDT!
I changed the oil for the first time on my '01 turbo the other day. Previous oil was M1 0W40 which ran for 4k miles, put in M1 TDT 5W40. That oil sure does shoot out instantaneously out of that oil tank! I did the C4 fuse pull recommended by Kevin at UMW to build oil pressure before starting, worked like a charm. No hydraulic lifter clatter upon startup. A little disappointed since my IMS noise didn't change much, I was expecting a reduction in noise since that seemed to be one of the results in making the switch. Can anyone else chime in on that? Does it get better after putting a couple hundred miles on the oil?
Also, the oil pressure it a lot higher at idle when I cold start the car. On the 0W40, oil pressure was just under 2 bar at idle even with a cold start. On the TDT oil pressure is at 4.5 bar at idle with a cold start. Once, the oil warms up to operating temperature the idle oil pressure settles to 2 bar. Under revs the oil pressure is always 4.5-5 bar with both oils. Would the slightly higher viscosity make that much of a difference? I mean its not like I switched to 15W50. Everything runs perfectly, but just curious.
Gotta love changing your own oil. After doing this oil change I don't think I'll ever use the dealer. This car was dealer serviced and when I drained one of the turbos it didn't have the aluminum crush washer Lazy service techs.
Thanks in advance for your input!

Nice job! I switched couple of oil changes ago and I'm at 4k miles now on this change without adding a drop of oil. Not to mention 2 track days and few autox's and I beat the hell out of my car everyday As long as you take care of your 996tt, it's pretty damn reliable.

Did you notice a reduction in IMS noise after your first change to TDT? How about oil pressure, high at idle on cold start? Overall the car seems to run much smoother, even the voltage stays pinned at 14 volts when it used to sit at about 13.5. Could be the placebo effect of a fresh oil change though

The reason everyone has reduced IMS noise after the oil change is the fact that fresh oil will have higher viscosity compared to the old oil, especially when you compare fresh 5w40 to old 0w40 which is less viscous to begin with. After a couple of thousand miles the oil thins out a bit and voila, IMS noise is more apparent. There is nothing magical about TD 5w40 except for about 7% more zddp than the Porsche approved M1 0w40 or 5w50

I use M1 5w50. My IMS is fairly quiet but I do notice a slight reduction in noise for about 1000 miles or so after an oil change. Every oil will shear down after a while and become less viscous. There is really no magic formula. Heck, there is one guy on here that has over 200k miles on the clock on his 996tt and still on original turbos using only M1 0w40. Go figure.....

My recent oil change, first time for me too, instantly quieted the IMS noise with 5w50. I don't know what weight I drained out as the last invoice for an oil change from the PO only noted Mobil 1 without its weight. I sent a sample off to Blackstone to establish a good baseline. Unfortunately I seem to have gotten one of those TT's that consumes oil which I'm still coming to terms with and hope the analysis comes back without concerns.

HI,Out of all my oil info and material that I have..The Castrol 5W40 does not have as good as an additive package as the Mobil and Rottel 5W40s..you shouldnt need an additive with those,, like with the Castrol...IMO...

^^^ are you comparing the Castrol Syntec 5W40 to Mobil 1 TDT 5W40 and Rotella 5W40? both of those are turbo deisel motor oils the castrol is not, it's just a full synthetic petrol motor oil...so that is why you need the BG MOA additive, which would not be needed with the additive and zddp package of the turbo deisel oils...

Because, IMO- more noise means more wear (metal on metal). Less noise = better!
