Is Mobil 1 5w-50 approved oil
Time for annual oil change and have heard lots of comments about Mobil 1 5w-40 TDT and Mobil 1 5w-50. Couple of questions:
1) Is the 5w-50 Porsche approved and if so what are some sources in US to find it? Is this weight OK for year round in NC?
2) With the TDT, and higher ZDDP levels, is there concern of catalytic converter damage? Seems like I read on the Mobil web site that it may cause problems?
Thanks for the feedback.

1. Yes, M1 5w50 is on the the approved list
2. The new diesel oils are formulated for vehicles with cats. 07 and newer diesels have cats. TDT and Delvac 1 are ALSO approved for gasoline engines- says so right on the bottle. Mobil will also tell you it's perfectly OK to run diesel oil in your gasoline car.
Oh, and 3- ANOTHER OIL THREAD?

Interesting comments from Mobil when I asked about using the 5w40 TDT and whether it would damage catalyst.
It may be safe and not damage your emission system and equipment but it
does not meet any of the stringent Porsche approvals and requirements.
Mobil would strongly suggest that you stay with the recommended Mobil1
0W40 product.
Thanks.

I get my M1 5w50 at Grease Monkey in Denver. They are a Mobil dealer and stock it. Around $6 per quart.

I talked to several local experts and they all recommended M1 or Castrol 5w40 or 5w50 gas motor oil, others they thought were good was BG, Redline, Amsoil, and Motul....I asked about the TDT stuff and they told me to stick with the oil for petrol motors ... and simply added the BGE MOA for the zddp...
