yes, another audio system replacement thread...

So I've pretty much had enough of my stock bose most stereo. I've looked into all kinds of head unit/amp/speakers combinations ranging from "affordable" to "holy cow, I better get a 2nd job".

Here is what I'm considering doing at the moment:
-Kenwood Excelon head unit (model undecided)
-JL XD600/6 channel amp
-JL Evolution C5 Series 6-3/4" 3-way component speakers (doors + dash)
-JL Evolution C2 Series 4" coaxial speakers (rear)
-JL 1 or 2 8W3v3 subs in custom box (in place of bose sub box)

From a sound quality perspective, would it be better to have 4" coaxials in the dash and back with 6-3/4" subs in the doors or am I better off with the 3 way components up front?

I have also been looking at Focal and Rainbow speakers but not sure I want to drop that kind of coin. I'm no audiophile and I'm pretty sure my proposed system above will blow the stock system out of the water. I also only drive the car about once a week.

Any thoughts, comments, suggestions, or concerns are appreciated! Thanks!

I'll be doing something similar very soon.

I''m going to forget about the rear speakers completely, because I like a strong front stage presence.

I'll do the Focal 3 way fronts, a TRU 4 channel amp, with two channels bridged to one for sub. An Alpine double din nav head unit and probably a single 10 inch sub in a custom box.

Simple, yet should sound great in such a small area.

Keep us informed!

thanks, feel free to update this thread with your progress. I'm so tired searching the porsche forums for this info.

I hope you are not expecting direct replacement with those sizes... The door speakers are 5 1/2, but you can get 6 1/4 in there if you rework the mount. The dash speakers are 4 inch just like the rear. I replaced all of my stuff with a Pioneer Z120BT, Apline PDX-5 amp and replaced all the speakers with Infinity Kappas of equivalent size. I topped it all off with 2 x 6.5 inch subs in a custom enclosure. I had the room to add a couple of 6 1/4 speakers in the same enclosure as the sub - so I did. It all worked out quite nicely and the sound is amazing.

^that setup looks great! I'm going to guess you like CF? lol and yeah, I know I'm going to have to do some work to fit the door speakers.

Just curious, how did you wire up all those speakers to the pdx-5?

OK, since you asked, here is the wiring diagram for an 01. I'm hoping the wire colours are the same for everybody...

Amp wiring:

Speaker Wiring (disregard the speaker wiring on this - I did this before I had the amp):

I hope this helps.

Thanks! that is very useful and I'm sure many will get good use from it. I was just curious how you balanced it all out but I see now with the parallel wiring.

in the interest of saving weight, I'm thinking 3-way focals up front and instead of adding an amp, combining the both left channels and both right channels from the head unit directly to the 3-ways. Can I assume that if each channel from the head unit is pushing 22 watts RMS, then combining them, I would be pushing 44 watts RMS to each 3-way?

^unless the crossovers are bi-amp capable that will not work. also its a waste, 44 watts to focal 3 way separates is not enough power, they will sound awful, nice speakers need power otherwise they will not have the dynamics, transparancy, etc they are capable of

add a nice amp otherwise you are wasting your time and money

thanks, I will end up using an amp regardless to drive the sub so maybe I'll use a 4 channel amp and use 2 channels for the 3-ways and bridge the other 2 for the sub?

Good stuff here too!

- Is the the bezel around a the deck an OEM part or something you made?
- Did you find the right type of connector to mate into the factory speaker connector or just tied the wires together?
