Custom Intake Plenum Increases Air-Flow by 7-15% and Power by 21-50+ HP

In a separate thread, I posted about a new intake plenum I will be using when my engine is completed. This intake plenum was initially a limited production item that would not be readily available. Speed Gallery (board sponser) has since elected to expand this product line, and they are offering both custom intake plenums for 996TTs and plenum inserts for 993 and NA 996s. These new plenums and inserts divert the air as it exits the throttle body in order to prevent turbulence, smoothen out the air flow, and allow greater air flow.

SG offers these intake plenums for 996TTs using either the 70mm OEM throttle body or the 75mm 996NA throttle body. Using the 70 mm OEM throttle body, the new intake plenum increased air flow by 6% (from 760 cfm to 805 cfm), increased mid-range power by 30 HP (from 386 to 416 hp), and increased top-end power by 21 HP (from 435 to 456 hp) (according to testing performed by the manufacturer – see below). Using the 75 mm 996NA throttle body and intake plenum, air flow was increased by 15% (from 760 cfm to 876 cfm). That’s a whole lot more air. Assuming a similar percentage increase in HP (the percentage HP increase on the 70 mm set-up was greater than the percentage airflow increase), that would translate to well over 50 more HP in the mid-range and greater than 40 HP in the top end.

I am going with the 75 mm 996NA throttle body and intake plenum on my new set-up.

Awesome!

GIAC guys, do you think our programming will be able to take full advantage or would it need to be retuned?

The above-stated results were achieved without ECU retuning. I suspect retuning would result in an even greater increase in HP.

Such a simple design change. If it works, I wonder why Porsche doesn't just do this at the factory ...

It works to a degree. We used this design on KA about three years ago. I like your version of the idea.

Why doesn't the factory use it? Additional costs and . The factory could change the ECU a derive alot more power and they don't. The majority of people who own tt's are happy with the car as it comes from Porsche.

I believe that the new 997s already have these plenums (y- shape design).

I'm a little confused, is it a replacement plenum or an insert? And, does it replace the "Y" pipe or do you replace the entire throttle body?

Intake Plenum

993 NA, 993TT and 996: SG offers an insert into the existing intake plenum.

996TT: SG offers replacement intake plenums. SG offeres two different sizes: (a) one plenum is for the stock 996TT throttle body, which is purchased alone and used with the existing throttle body, and (b) a larger plenum for the larger 996NA throttle body, which is purchased either alone or in conjunction with a 996NA throttle body.

Y-Pipe

I know that SG offers a modified Y-Pipe for the larger 996NA throttle body (that is what I am getting). I do not know if they offer a modified Y-Pipe for the OEM 996TT throttle body.
