daily driver - 996TT vs E92 M3
#16
i drove an e92 m3 after owning a turbo there is absolutely no thrill to the m3!
the m3 would make a much better daily, but if you want a reason to wake up at 3am just to go for a drive get the turbo!
its literally like having a toy at your disposal!
my next car will be another 911 - not sure which one yet though!

I've owned one version or another of a 911 for over 30 years. They were always my second car. I've always had a BMW or MBZ as my daily driver. I'd get the M-3 which is a fantastic daily driver and save the Porsche for the special days you're in the mood and traffic is not an issue.

I recently purchased a 2004 996 Turbo 6-speed to be my daily driver. I have driven it 2000 miles since Friday, 1500 of which were the return trip from West Palm Beach to Wisconsin. It is a very comfortable long-distance cruiser, docile when you want it to be, ferocious when you need it to be.
I considered the E92 M3, as a long-time BMW enthusiast. I had an E46 M3 for a daily driver for about 3 years, before that an E36, in addition to my current E28 M5.
For me, the Turbo is a more exciting and involved choice, and I wanted AWD for the winter. It offered a new experience from a BMW M3 and fulfilled a desire born at the 2001 Chicago Auto Show. So far, I could not be happier.

My buddy is a BMW enthusiast (@'03 M3, '10 335i, '11 M3 coupe), he recently drove my modified 996TT - so here is a synopsis of his impressions...
Brakes, sound, suspension = feel is close to the same
His M3 is more comfortable / linear / many more electronic gizmos
My 996TT is more raw, and the acceleration is like nothing he has ever felt before
A stock 996TT may be a bit looser than the above comparison

I just drove an E90 M3 this weekend with suspension and exhaust.... I was stunned how little power there is below 4,000 RPMS.... It actually drove my nuts driving in stop and go traffic. I didn't enjoy the car until I found some county roads/highways and could keep the RPMS high
I prefer the RS4 over the M3 for a daily driver. And the Audi V8 has more torque down low to get you off the line

I feel like turbos in general are better for daily driving due to the low end grunt around town. I think the 335is was a better car driving around town than the m3. It wasn't until I could stretch the legs of the m3 that it was satisfying, but you can't do that all the time easily in town. Plus the gas mileage is a bit rough for not being able to have fun most of the time.
M Badger, I think you got the turbo I had been looking at. Was it at Brahman? A bit quicker on the trigger than me, haha.

Skullbusa you still didn't say if you want a stick shift or an auto.
Anyway, I agree, a 335i or 335is will be a better daily driver than both the M3 and the 996tt in my opinion (after driving all of the above).
