What Makes an Exhaust 'Ricey' ??

I'd just left my shop last night, and was walking down the street when a Japanese car drove past me

As it turned the corner the driver put his foot down and the car 'parped' it's way down the road

It got me thinking
What is it about an exhaust that makes it sound ricer?

What makes some exhausts sound badass, while others just sound like a bad fart?

I think the resonance and resonators to get that raspy sound is what defines a "ricer" setup IMO.

It's the engine.

It would be almost impossible to make a 57 Chevy sound ricey

Amplifying a 4 cylinder engine...that's my theory.

It all starts with the engine. Not all 4cyl sound ricey though. Subaru's sound great with decent 3" exhaust.

I think it has more to do with the purpose, or lack thereof, than the actual sound. To me... Ricer exhausts are loud on a car that was never intended to make any real power... And the trade of volume and tone has NOT been offset by an appreciable gain in power. Loud exhaust on a car that netted out 4hp. What's the point? The trade-off isn't there.

My Supra isn't exactly quiet, or nice sounding for that matter, but the 4" exhaust makes a huge difference in power. The trade-off is warranted.

Just my $.02.

4 cylinders can sound sexy---you just have to know what you are doing.
