My Sportec Rebuilt Engine Going in Car

Ok here we go, almost getting back to base (or beyond), must say the Speedtech exhaust looks wider that 2.5 inches

nice, make sure you take a lot of pictures all around it while it is on the crate, always helpfull when you are looking for something and you can't see it in place, having a picture of parts you can't see once installed is always helpfull.

Looks good Richard - it seems you are getting close!

Richard, our X-cellerator cross-flow system is designed to be full 3" up to the X-Flow muffler. The muffler internals and tips are then 2.5" on the "quiet" version you purchased. This design provides a little extra breathing room for your turbos and allows you the option to swap to a full 3" system with just a muffler and tip change, should you want to in the future.

Good luck with the new motor!

Now that's good thinking, what are those cat converter? They look pretty small.

4", 100 cell cats. That's all you need with 100 cell cats - too large and you get reduced flow and excess turbulence.

Hey John, In theory exhaust gasses cool as they leave the motor so the reduction to 2.5 from the X to the tips is not really a restriction. Is there data that supports that on your end?

Richard, good luck with the motor. Any internal mod's?

Tim,

What we have seen is the 2.5 flows the same as a full 3" up to about 3,500 RPM's and after 5,000 RPM's until redline. The 3" does make more power at WOT in a 1,500 RPM section between 3500-5000 RPM's, but it is very brief and impossible to detect the difference while driving (at least for me).

John the exit pipe from the muffler doesn't actually look any smaller than the intake pipe size wise, is the pipe diameter inside the muffler 2.5 or just the tips, the mechanic brought me the tips and kinda said "what the hell are these" as it all looks like a 3 inch exhaust until the tips ????????????????????????

Hi Richard,

It's all by design - let me explain how our system works...The muffler internals are 2.5" on the 2.5 quiet. The muffler inlet/outlet connectors are 3" on all versions. The 2.5 tip has a 3" end to fit into the muffler, then quickly goes to 2.5" for the 90 degree bend and to the finished tip. This is by design, as it allows you to optionally use full 3" tips on a 2.5 muffler, which results in a one step louder exhaust system. We call it the 2.5 "sport" sound option. If the 2.5 is too quiet, you can liven it up with just a tip swap. Likewise on the full 3.0 system, if it's too loud, you can quiet it down with just a tip swap to the 2.5 tips on a 3.0 muffler. We call this the 3.0 "moderate" sound level. What we achieve with this design is 4 sound levels by swapping standard modular components and the customer has the option to vary their sound for special events, if they choose - for instance, if you like it loud and your wife doesn't, you can run the "sport" tip option all week, then put on the "quiet" tips when you are going for a drive with the wife. It's very quick and easy to do. Swapping mufflers is a little more involved, but still relatively easy and the same principal applies. The sound can be tailored to suit the situation. You shuld explain this to your mechanic - I think he will understand why after hearing this...

surely that would highly depend on what turbos are being used and how much air the car is actually moving and the power level it is at

I think we should keep this thread about Richards motor from here on - I don't want to take over his thread, but to answer this last question....

Correct, that is with K24/18G turbos and full supporting mods (intake plenum, hard pipes, turbos, wastegates, 2.5" IC's, 2.5" x 75mm Y-Pipe, 75mm TB, 75mm IPD plenum, 60 lb. injectors, dual fuel pumps, 1.3+ bar tune, etc.).

Below this level, the difference would be less, at this level - this is what can be expected, beyond this level the delta would increase.

Now, back to Richards build...Richard, let's hear more about the choice of components by Sportec!

Richard, have you considered doing all the "Safe" mods while this engine is sitting on the floor? A couple examples I can think of right now is the coolant pipe that getsa loose or falls out on everyone an the GT2 slave mod?

Oh an Speedtech exhausts rule...

Yes, good idea. You should do the coolant pipes. I had this happen twice before welding them in place (after the second failure). It's a real pain when it pops open and can be very expensive to repair...
