On a car this old, I would keep your eye out for one with a few aethetic mods or fixes to common problems. It seems that each successive owner adds a few things, so by the time the 3rd or so owner gets it you can have some nice stuff essentially for free (exhaust, wheels, etc). If you are a modder, that's just money in your pocket. So in my mind, stock is actually kind of a turn off.

I'm not saying go buy some car that is chipped with new turbos on it, but if you buy this one you're probably going to at some point have the leaky spoiler problem, the clutch accumulator etc.

I'd hold firm on your price. 20k miles stock in my mind doesn't really command a premium (which in my mind 50k is).

Porsche dealers do some lousy PPIs..especially a P dealer that is inspecting a car they've serviced for a while and for a client that will buy other new (expensive) Porsches from them.

I recommend a CPO inspection checklist using precisely the CPO criteria- then add a dump of the DME for over-rev data and a paint inspection.

On price I have no guidance, out of that dance for a while....

Guys, I know the market dictates our 996 TT pricing but I am amazed that a Porsche 911 Turbo (996) is selling in the same range as a Turbo that's 20 years older!!? Air cooled aside the build and performance is no comparison. Do you see our TT's coming back in price or continue to slide to the low 20's.

Well I ended up buying the car and paid $47.5K. I walked at $45K and he didn't call back. The car is almost exactly what I wanted, seal gray w/ black interior, Aluminum Shifter/Brake/Dials. Only thing missing that I wanted was lumbar in the seats. Was looking at a '03 x50 for $52K, but it needed a few thousand in work and it had the wood package which I did not want. I also bought the car out of state so there are large tax advantage for IL, only $1,500 tax vs. 10% tax in Chicago. Feel comfortable with the seller and the cars condition. In the end with taxes it is a wash and in a year I am not going to be sweating the $2.5K. I think he could have sold the car easier if his ad didn't have such a bad description and terrible pictures. I AM TOTALLY EXCITED TO BE GETTING A 996!!!!!

Glad you didn't get caught in " anything over $40,000 for a 996 TT and you are screwed" menatality

Enjoy the car and be safe

That sounds like a very nice and clean 996TT, and since it was so close to what you wanted I wouldn't sweat the slight payment over your original budget either. You definitely get what you pay for if you shop smart and do your research, and it really sounds like you got exactly what you wanted in the condition that you wanted. You're going to have a great time with that car! Now post up some pics already.
