Cable Adjustment For B&M SSK?

I'm not happy with the feel of my shifter

I think I can make improvements by adjusting the cables

I see the 997 shifters come with the tool to centralise the shifter
This tool isn't provided with the aftermarket kits

Does the centralising tool fit onto the aftermarket shifters in order to provide correct adjustment, or Is there another way to work out the ideal adjustment needed?

O think it will fit. How will you adjust the cables? Do you have an idea how you are going to do the adjustment? I ask because I may adjust mine also.

HI,I could never get my BM to shift that smooth or good when it was cold..I even had the Porsche dealer readjust it to the best that they could...I went to the Porsche 997 short shifter and it was worth it.....

I'm pretty sure I'll switch to the 997 shifter too
I'd just like to try adjusting the B&M one first

I doubt it'll make any difference, I just want to be certain in my own mind first

I marker my cable before I removed the oem shifter. When I installed my b&m I just matched up th lines I marked on the cable. Three years later no problems.

I had the B&M on my old car and have the 997 SSK now. I marked the threads like the DIY said to do but still think it could smoother.

OK, I've just got a 997 shifter from someone fitting a SSK to their car

The shifter I got doesn't have the centralizing tool
Do I need to get this before making the switch, or can I just install it as-is by marking the cables length first?

The Porsche centering tool will not fit fit the B&M shifter...

Thanks everyone

I just replaced my B&M with a 997 SSK

Didnt come with a centralising tool as it was used

I used the markings I made when I installed the B&M

Everything's lined up nicely - and the 997 shifter is so much nicer

I have the B&M now, not too thrilled, was it worth the time

to go to the 997 shifter ? Did you install the 997 SSK or just the regular 997 ? There have been some threads recently with many not very happy with the 997 setup, so I'm a bit confused on how to proceed.

Thanks.

My opinion is that the 997 shifter is superior to the B&M shifter

As far as whether it's worth switching from the B&M to the 997 - For me, yes it was

The B&M shifter was very notchy
It took a lot of effort to get it into gear
It was very slow to 'centralize' itself - when you wiggle the shifter whilst in neutral it wouldn't spring back again very quickly

The 997 shifter is not notchy at all
It takes very little effort to get into gear
It centralized itself far quicker

As far as the difference in throw is concerned - When in 1st, 3rd, or 5th gear the shifters move forwards about the same amount

When in 2nd, 4th, or 6th gear the 997 shifter moves further back than the B&M shifter

I was always very slow when shifting with the B&M
The reasons for this firstly the notchiness, but also the fact that it wouldn't spring into neutral very quickly meant it was easy to miss shifts

Going from second to third I'd miss the gate and the shifter would hit between the first and third gate

With the 997 shifter I can shift far quicker with less effort and due to it popping back into neutral quicker it's impossible for me to miss shifts

The longer travel isn't an issue at all as the 'feel' of the 997 shifter still allows you to shift quicker with it

The 997 shifter isn't life changing
It isn't the best, slickest shifter in the world, but it's definitely much improved on the B&M shifter

Once the transmission is warmed up, my B&M with EVOMS shift linkage is spot-on and smooth; as "rifle bolt" as you can get with cables. I personally wouldn't consider a different shifter.

I was however **** about adjusting the cables when I installed the B&M...
