Tim, I am now planning to go to your shop for a deep heart surgery ;-) I need to see a specialist, like you, installing a crankshaft, sleeves, pistons , timing the cams and taking you out after for a beer!!!!

JP, glad your car is back on the road. I am always in awe of those who do major overhauls on their own. I never learned car mechanic skills.

carlos fandango is infamous around these parts
Superb thread!

I have what may be a dumb question but when you pin the pipe you drill right through the whole pipe? Does this not drop some bits of metal or swarf inside the pipe. Is all the coolant flushed out then, or is this not an issue.

Also can anyone point me in the direction of an idiots guide to pinning these pipes, which screws, sealant etc. I wont do it myself but love to understand the whole process just to keep my workshop on their toes.

Many thanks!

In the repair on my car, the motor was out and the parts were removed, so there was no problem to catch and remove all of the turnings. It's only an issue if you try to do the repair in situ.

Reviving an old thread but just did a little exercise . For DIY mechanic out there, for the coolant pipe welding job, you got all the part# (updated may last year 2012) that I've order + prices I've paid (Sonnen). Of course may be you don't need all of those but it can help locate the ones needed and give you an idea of what's the cost. Sorry if I forgot any but did my best to help. The total is $335.17 including all the rubber hoses. Of course that is in the better world. I had to include 4 oil lines for the turbos that were seized on the water pump housing, a water pump because one impeller was broken, thermostat housing because I dropped it by accident and also I've replaced all the hose clips and clamps ...
