What the rep. did was meesed up his warrenty by officially notifying the porsche NA of all his mods....
since he has an ecu... turbos ... exhaust... well, that basically covers all of the powertrain. So if u get a oil leak- will they cover? I dont know but thats messed up... especially if B&M is the manufacturer of the porsche ssk.
like I said, i got lucky and mine was replaeced.
there is one more person that currently is awaitng the "2nd" gear warrenty issue.. 6speed member.. lets see what they do to him.

Interesting this topic just popped up:

I bought an '03 Boxster S in 7/03 and soon thereafter installed the B&M SSK. Got sick of the car so sold it 3/04 with ~5K miles on it and bought my current 996.

Yesterday I get a frantic call from the new owner of my Boxster S who says his car is at the dealer and needs a new tranny because the B&M was installed improperly. I call BS immediately on the dealer but asked for more facts. He said the car has about 20K miles on it now and he's been having to grind it in to 2nd gear for the last 3 mos. Now, once he gets it in gear, it pops out of second. He also mentioned they told him that there was some sort of oil leak that they will fix to. He was pissed/freaked that he might have to pay for a new tranny since they were making him pay for a "reinstall" of the B&M.

Since it was afterhours, I called a tech there whom I'm friends with who happens to be working on the car. He said the RMS is leaking and since the tranny is acting up, he's going to go ahead and replace it under warranty while he's in there doing the RMS. He also said that sometimes SSK's in general can cause premature tranny wear b/c people "slam" it in 2nd and don't allow for the synchros to "line up"

He was going to charge this guy for a SSK install since he's working on the transmission and couldn't really justify putting in a new tranny without fixing the most probable source. Not to say that was the source, but this way the guy is covered without question by Porsche warranty since a Tech has now officially installed it in the case any future tranny issues were to arise.

I called my distressed buyer back and he was still kinda pissed that he had to fork out $250. I told him they're actually doing him a favor and to not burn any bridges.

To some, it unfortunately comes down to $$$

Interesting. Since the problem is also caused by "poor...coordination by the pilot" (which sounds like an excuse to me for an engineering defect) pretty hard to blame B&M ssk. Ya wonder what kind of coordination is required.

I just had a B&M short shifter installed in my TT. Admittedly, I'm not one of those guys who has to shift in less than 10 milliseconds to feel like a racecar driver everytime I drive the car. But, I would think that these cars would be able to align the synchros much faster since the prototypes (cup cars, racecars, etc.) are driven with lightning fast shift speeds by the factory drivers. In fact, I'm almost sure that they practice shifting at somewhere around 20 ms, don't they?

Maybe some of you tranny guys and/or racing guys could chime in to help me understand why the street cars are experiencing these problems. Thanks.

Do the race cars use the soft " comfy " brass synchros in 1st-3rd gears like the street cars , though ?

Legal opinion

Gentlemen you need to contact your attorney if porsche continues to jack you on this issue. The memo from porsche clearly indicates that normal use of the transmission can also cause these problems. Legally porsche must PROVE that the aftermarket shifter caused the problem. Since the second gear problem is happening even in cases without the shifter they will never PROVE that the B&M is the problem, especially if B&M is manufacturing the porsche substitute. Warranty issues are business. If porsche can bull**** even one customer by denying a warranty claim they will. Quit being wimps. If even one customer takes them to court they will back down. Their legal fees will be much more expensive than replacing the tranny's. They will make the business decision to back down. Fish

I dont think the memo states that normal use will also cause the problem.... its states that "POOR" coordination by the driver may also cause this problem. The problem is that it simply pops out of 2nd gear after u release the gas (under considerable load). I was at the dealer where this car was still at... after 3 months... waiting for "parts " to replace... ie. synchros...
For some reason Porsche has a 'hard on" when it comes to B&M shifters.
