flex disc

that is the connection between the output from the transmission going forward to the drive shaft. it is located under the transmission mount. i am sure mine is not abnormal for a 2001. most likly anybody with a 2001, with close milage and an original flex disc will have the same thing.

Question, is this rubber part the main component that handles the torque transfer to the front wheels?

Part known to most as a guibo joint. Takes up shock load in the driveshaft and isolates driveline parts from slight misalignment under load(keeps vibration down as a result)
Common to see cracks in them with age. Used on many others cars too, like BMW's and the like.
