Bobby, do you know how much rear travel you have before you bottom out on the bump stops?

How low is too low

I measured my ride height from the factory points and I think I am lower than others I have seen here. Is this too low? What are negatives of this ride height? It feels pretty good.

Mine : 101mm fronts, 110mm rears

Factory Turbo US is 158f/163r (which looks silly next to my car)
X73 is 128f/133r
2003 GT2 is 118f/133r
2003 GT3 is 112f/125r

So I am 11-15mm lower than the lowest factory heights, and 2 1/4" lower than factory turbo in the front and just over 2" lower in the rear.

I am now upgrading from 550lb fronts and 900 rears (realized suspension guy never upgraded fronts to 700 as requested last time) to 800 and 1,000. I'll let everyone know how it feels after my next trip to Watkins Glen on August 16-18.

2-2.25" lower than stock.. uhh what? How is that even possible? the front chin would be dragging on the ground...

Do you have pics of the car at that height? What tires sizes and offsets are you running to be so low without (or are you?) rubbing?

That's nuts, I gotta see pics.

Pics

Suspension out for heavier springs. It should be going back together next weekend. I will post pics once it is reassembled. Remember, these are measurements from the factory points. I will also take fender measurements for comparison.

ride height and suspension

OK,

Motons are now back in the car with heavier springs. Boy, what a mess. Last year when I originally had the motons (lightly used) installed, I requested that the installing shop (well known race suspension shop) replace the 550F/850R springs that were on the dampers with 700F/900R. When I picked up the car, I noticed that they had not changed the fronts, but had changed the backs. I decided to track the car to see how it felt with what I thought were 550F/900R and it still felt too soft. Then last month after blowing a remote hose of the driver's side rear damper, I decided it was time to upgrade the springs to 800F/1000R since the rears had to come off for rebuilding anyway.

Long story short, the rebuild shop informed me that the rears were 600, not 900, but I had already ordered the 800F/1000R and gotten some trusted advice that these would be good rates for a car that sees 90+% of it's miles on the track.

I installed the rears myself and drove the car to my local shop to have them do the fronts this morning. The one thing I can tell you is that 1,000 pound rears are not street friendly. Wow are they stiff. You really feel every bump in the road. I will report back after the fronts are in and I get my next three days at Watkins Glen on August 16-18 to see how they impact my times. I am currently running 2:10s, and am hoping for some notable improvement.

Also, after installing the newly springed rears the ride height is 105mm front and 130mm in the rear with rough fender measurements at 25 front and 25 5/8 in the rears.

With brand new 245/40/18 and 305/35/18 NT01s, I'm at 102mm front and 125mm rear (25.00" front and 25.6" rear ground to fender) on JRZ coilovers.

I am using 700F/1000R springs with no harshness. Adjusted the bump way down in the rear on the coil overs, not so much on the fronts. My car is used 90%+ for the track too.

Check the bumpstops to make sure you have some travel, that maybe causing the "not street friendly" feel.

What is your spring rate on the front?

Thanks 996Twins,

You are correct. I never went back and updated that post. After final ride height adjustment the 800/1000 got a LOT more street friendly. While this next bit may be a little hard to understand, I had to lower my ride height a little to allow me to reduce the preload on the struts, so they could do their jobs better on the rebound portion on the dampening and that made all the difference in the world -- the problem was that with the higher ride height (130mmRear) the springs were too preloaded, and by lowerering the car to 110mm it allowed space to reduce the preload on the springs.

Glad all is well.

For those who's cars are mostly street driven like mine (with exception of about 6 autocrosses and 4 track days a year) I have found the following set up works well: H&R Street Coilovers, 18" wheels and stock tire sizes, factory measurements of 110 front, 120 rear, fender measurements are 25 1/4 all around.

Another P has a spectacular aura aboutAnother P has a spectacular aura about
25 1/4 frt and rear, running on Moton Street sports. Rides like a dream, on and off track.
Stock size BBS RSGT wheels and OEM tire sizes ( when on the street anyway )
Oh, but spaced out 7mm in frt and 18 in rear.
