Coolant hoses?

OK, so I just picked up my 2001 Turbo for an incredible price (w 48K miles). Bought it from a friend who has owned it for the past 5 years, but he only put about 3K miles on it in that time and had no issues with it, EVERYTHING works perfectly.

Here's the problem, since I don't have any of the service records, I plan to go through all the fluids (oil, trans, front diff, brakes and coolant) in the car, and do the coil packs and plugs and drive belt as a preventive maintenance step. Everything will be DIY.

I'm just a little concerned about driving around with 11 year old (worst case) hoses...since I don't have any of the prior service records so I don't know if they have ever been changed.

My question...since I'm flushing the coolant, would this be a good time to do all the hoses on the car? Or just leave them alone? Can the hoses even be done with the engine in the car?

Thanks!

Absolutely. I have a thread on Rennlist in which Kevin gives part numbers for three hoses. Those three hoses were done without dropping the motor.

Make sure you put Delvac 1 gear oil in the transmission.

Thanks Paul...yes I ordered the Delvac from Lufteknic. The cooling system only has 3 hoses? I thought there were at least 7 or 8?

I found the link in Rennlist...thanks for pointing it out!

thanks!!

No, more than 3, but Kevin told me to replace 3, so I did!

Yes, there's 3 hoses to replace that go to the water pump. One on the driver's side, one passenger side, and one other hose. They're about $35-40 each. You want the 997 hose for one of them (driver's side I think?), and the 996 part for the others.

Click on my build thread and you can get the details.

There is a total of eight hoses and some are really difficult to reach. See post#45 https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...-needed-3.html

Im in the process of replacing every coolant hose in the car, so far ive replaced all of the hoses in the front of the car. There are tons of hoses in these cars, most are a bit tough to get at. Biggest issue I found was how clogged up the radiators were, took them out and cleaned them out. Highly recommend doing that, plugged up rads will create all sorts of issues.

Thanks Jpflip. Exactly what I was looking for...it appears that the majority of these are not going to be reachable without dropping the engine, so I'll wait, and just go with a coolant flush for now.

And I plan to drop the front bumper and clean out the radiators in the next couple of weeks.

I'm pretty sure the very slight coolant smell I am getting is from the coolant tank cap...no visible leaks (I've looked pretty thoroughly and appears slight white residue around the cap), and the smell is back by the drivers rear corner.

I have slight coolant smell too. But from the front. Only in cold weather. I am not losing any coolant. I don't know should I go ahead and change the hoses? I think I will do a pressure test at dealer to see what's what.
