vexing spoiler problem

My Porsche specialist hasn't been able to fix my 04 996 tts spoiler after several attemps. Items that have been completed: new pump, new seals, new hydrolyic oil (with multiple bleeds). He claims that it "works perfectly" in the shop and then fails on the first manual or + 70 run.
The electric seems intact. One can hear the pump, but to no effect. The standard error message on the dash is "rear spoiler failure."

Any ideas amigos?

the "trick" to spoiler repair is making certain the fluid levels are correct on re-bleed or else you'll be dealing with uneven deployment. based upon what you've said, i think your tech is on the right path, but may not have the fluid levels correct. this assumes all other parts are working. i have the spoiler bleeding/repair diy somewhere if you need it. i'd try again.

my tech struggled with it for a couple of re-bleeds and was messing with it on the bench with it working fine and as we were about to give up on having the stanchions raise and lower evenly... voila. it's not an exact science unless you replace the assembly with all new stuff. so i now have plumage again and a fixed wing *kit* on standby. ha.

i would seriously consider trying to rebleed it again. gl with it.

If you can hear the spoiler deployment motor, but get no movement, it is possible that the set screw on the output of the pump is not tight on the shaft. This allows the motor to turn, but it doesn't drive the screw that pushes the fluid. Could be that if it isn't tight, it would work against little resistance in the shop, but not against the force of the air @ 70 mph.

I know this seems bizarre, but it really happened on my car. To check/repair, demount the motor/pump assembly, and remove the screws on the outside of the case. Slide the motor out, and check the set screw. At least this doesn't cost anything.

Good luck,

Jon
