AWE Turbo Upgrades?

Has anyone dealt with AWE tuning for the K24 turbos or 700R turbo package? I live close to them and I'm getting close to settling on a 996 turbo, and am definitely interested in some upgrades later on down the road. Can the car still be driven as a daily with either of these 2 upgrades or is it just too much?

The AWE / GIAC set up is probably the best tuned package out there in that power bracket.

The GIAC tuning and there package is in my opinion right at the limits for a nice daily driver. Make any more power and you better start thinking about con rods, studs and a few more internal engine mods.

And one mans opinion of a daily driver Vs anothers are two seperate subjects.

The car will accelerate very fast when the turbos spool, untill then you will have a fairly mild mannered car with the exception of a more aggressive clutch that you will need to handle the power.

When I was looking for my car I was pretty well sold on there 700 kit. It is a very well thought out package that runs very smoothly.

Also in my opinion I would not waste time on a k24 set up. The high perf K16's are better and the Tial28's are very good too.

With either of those two you need to figure in an upgraded clutch as a must and some upgraded rear axles down the road.

700R is a nice kit. but for 20k you can put together a better kit based around A28s identical turbos in the AWE kit or larger A30 bolt in units from Tial. main component you can do better on is clutch and tuning as well as a proper flowing exhaust.
  • A3076 TIAL Turbochargers -5000$
  • Custom 3" Exhaust System - 1800$
  • Forge/997.2/AWE Intercoolers - 1000-2700$
  • Forge or APR Diverter Valves - 400$
  • EPL or Proto Tune -2000$
  • RPS/ERP triple carbon clutch - 4000$
  • Proper fuel system not just a booster pump and injectors 2500-3000$
  • All necessary installation hardware -500$
There is 20 grand spent smarter with much better driveability then single disc stage 2.5 or stage 3 clutches
I think more importantly is to decide what you want to use the car for before you go and spend a ton of money and then realize there are better options for what you wanted to do. Road course, street pulls, cross country drives lol. Then set a power goal ot time goals. Example: Run 10s, Beat a Carrera GT. Then figure out what you need to get there and only then spend the $$$

prodigymb - You think the triple carbon is better for street use than a Sachs stage 3? Coupled with a LWFW, chatter seems worse with a carbon unit. And the LWFW already makes the car sound like it has loose valves.

i had the stage 3 for a year and now i have the RPS triple. it is very quiet and there is no clutch chatter, the only time you hear it a little is when you clutch in and even at that its about 20% of the noise you hear with a lightweight flywheel. not to mention that noise is always there when engine is running. I hate the sound of LWFW.

pricepoint yes - the stage 3 will run about half of what RPS/ERP clutch runs, thats why i bought it. but if you are doing a 20k build, a nice clutch would be a top priority to work into it.

Thanks to all above, very thorough reviews and feedback! I think the A30 tial turbos are a bit too much for a daily, not looking for 1000hp

700 kits are great daily. I loved mine, it's all in the tuning and AWE/GIAC is one of a few who are the best.

Many good kits out there , when going with big power I would recommend going with proven tuner that can provide support and make sure your car is performing and putting down safe power as it should, I think AWE is great choice, also you should check out Speedriven offer on 911tuning ski850 kit... best of luck

Also live fairly close to AWE, and had them install their Gen2 996TT exhaust recently. Great guys, would highly recommend them.

As prodigymb mentions, dollar for dollar you can probably piece it all together more cheaply on your own, but there's something to be said with having solid post-sale and post-install support from a local and reputable tuner - how much that is worth, is up to each of us individually.

Best advice in this thread though is to really be honest with yourself about your Turbo's intended purpose and goals, and only then determine what mods/package works best for you. These cars are pretty damn fast with just a $4-6k investment into tune and exhaust... sure, the 700 kits will be even more so, but it's a lot more coin. Only you will know if it's worth it, to you.
