Turbo vs NA
#17
Wouldn't the TT have the same power (or more) as the NA before the turbo kicks in? So wouldn't the TT have just as responsive a throttle as the NA before the turbo kicks in and then the big boom of turbo thrust?
Or does having the turbo take away a little power and/or responsiveness before the turbo kicks in?

If I understand correctly, the turbo has a lower compression ratio to help deal with boost situations, and so no, it does not have the same power as NA when the turbo is not spooled up.
From my experience, the issue with turbo's is not just lag. Their power delivery is not really direct. You cannot 100% know what the power delivery is going to be when you adjust the throttle, at least from my experience. And no, I don't think you can get a turbo to be as responsive as a good NA engine.

Superfan,
I too hated the turbo lag of the TT vs. my Boxster S and Supercharged Audi which both have more linear torque curves. However, when I chipped the TT with the GIAC Stage 1, much, if not all of the noticeable turbo lag went away. The car is much more fun to drive and I'm now much happier. You may want to take a look at chipping the car. I think you'll change your mind.

Out of this driveway, I put close to 20,000 miles on the TT, 6,000 miles on the Ruf, and 4,000 on the 2004 C2 over a two year period of time. I finally sold the C2 because I never drove it and I bought it to keep from putting so many miles on my Turbo every year.
After driving the Turbo, the NA just doesn't do it for me. I traded the 04 C2 for an 04 TT cabriolet.

Here are my two daughters enjoying the TT cab during a recent track day. Once you go turbo, you never go back, unless its Ferrari. Love my 355 and the way it sounds.
BTW, I don't think the TT is really any slower that first split second. Both of my 996 TTs, even in stock form, practically smoked all four wheels and as soon as you stomped on the pedal in first gear and hit red line immediately therefater. Must be thinking turbo lag of pre-1994 Turbos same as twin turbos. My old 930 lagged like hell.

Turbo vs. NA..... My 89 944 S2 is faster than my buddy's 86 944 Turbo for about 1/8 of a mile. After that its all over for me. As for 996's, come on dude.... have you actually driven the two back to back? Its a night and day difference. Turbo lag or not, the TT is faster in any way shape or form.
