Comprehensive Gearbox oil cooler kit

I'm about to drop of my car to get the coolant hoses welded and figured I'd get an LSD installed at the same time which will necessitate the installation of a gearbox cooler. I've researched on line but can't really find what I'm looking for. Does anyone know is someone out there has put together a comprehensive all inclusive oil cooler kit for the 996tt? I've talked to Gbox and they can sell you a pump and cooler but you have to source the lines, this, that and other. It would be great if someone would put a kit together for this purpose, maybe something along the lines of what Evoms has done with the GT2 conversion kit. Hint, hint, anyone out there listening? Also, if anyone out there has installed one in their car, any pictures would be appreciated. I've seen the write up by Mikelly and Al Norton showing the various pieces zip tied all over the place but I was wondering if someone has done this with some brackets resulting in a cleaner more "factory" instal..

AFAIK there is not a kit put together for the 996TT. I believe California Motorsports(CMS) sells a drain and fill plug that is pre-threaded for a 90degree fitting or whatever. To most clean oem looking solution is the GT2/3 setup, but that requires a a case section be replaced or welded for fittings. You can cleanly stow cooling lines with Adel clamps for a more factory look. Just attach them to existing hard lines and make sure to use the rubber lined clamps.

i dont see why putting some lines and fitting together would create an issue for any capable shop...

u could always buy a "kit" and pay double i guess.

If there was a kit, I would. That's why I was posting this to see if someone has come out with a kit that would have the brackets, lines, cooler, pump, etc. Not really worried about the cost which could easily be outweighed by the time it takes to machine brackets, etc... Sometimes one stop shopping is the most cost effective...

Why do you need a cooler and what is your goal?

I won't speak for him on this, but it seems to be a mod to do if you have an LSD. At least that is what has been going around the web here. Not sure if it is neccesary for street cars with LSDs or just heavily tracked cars.

ok. out the drain plug into the pump then through a cooler and in the fill plug? Or drill and tap the case for sprayers to coat each gear on the input shaft?

I track my car on a regular basis (don't drive it on the street much) and I'm in the process of having my engine dropped and all the coolant fittings welded. While that's done, I'm adding a Guard LSD and would like additional cooling to extract the extra heat from the box.

The drain plug and fill plug setup would address the LSD heat issue, but not the 5/6 gear cooling/lubrication issue he may see on the track. Not sure how much of an issue this would be seeing other gearbox work would most likely be needed before the 5th and 6th gear were damaged. In the long run I really don't know how much of a difference the additional lubrication actually makes. It would be a good GT Gears question.

If he tracks a substantial amount of the time, he may want to get a GT2 gearbox that has all of the cooling already integrated. Or he can go baller and pickup a 996 cup gearbox or a 997 cup sequential setup.

I personally spoke with Matt (GTgears) at his shop last week when we were discussing the type of LSD set up for my car. He agrees that cooling the box goes a long way towards prolonging its life if you track the car 10-15 days per year. He suggested tapping the case for the fluid pick up near the bottom on the side of the case and tapping it again near the top returning oil onto the ring and pinion. We are going this route as I did not want to use the fill and drain plugs due to their less than ideal location. My shop has most of the pieces for the kit finalized so we should be good to go in another week or so. I don't think cooling the tranny is really needed if you are just running the car on the street or doing 1 or 2 DE days per year and if I wasn't tracking the car I wouldn't be doing it. My transmission is working perfectly and I'd like to keep it that way as long as possible. Frequent gear oil changes are pretty important and I do it every 6-10 track days.

you should think about getting cool oil on 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears. 3rd is notorious for breaking on the road course in turbo trans.

Yeah, my home track is predominantly run in 3rd with a couple of turns in 2nd and two straights in 4th. I agree. We're still in the planning stages. I'll take some pics once we get it all set up.

I dont feel that way. A couple of 1/8'' npt holes is all that is needed over the gears sets you are looking to cool and a 3/8 or maybe a 1/2'' hole over the ring gear. The system will not be running any psi, it is just transferring oil through a cooler then back to the case.
