Another 996TT "Which Exhaust to Buy Thread!"
I feel it’s time to get the car sounding a bit beefier so I have been doing some research on the different exhaust systems that are available for the 996 turbo. (Surprised at how many are available)
I'm looking for a 100 cell cat back system that is on the loud & aggressive side of things and ideally something that will pop, crackle & bang on the down shifts/over run when driving hard & will not drone too bad at cruising speeds. (Not much then, I hear you say!)
Weight is also a factor for me as I have already removed 19kg from the front of the car (spare wheel & tools) & 10kg from the middle/rear of the car (rear seats + fittings) so would like to remove another chunk from the rear to even the weight loss out. Stock exhaust with cats weighs 26kg.
Below is a list of the exhausts that I have looked at with details & sound clips of each one, there are also lots of other makes available but this ended up being my short list!
It’s interesting when you look at what you use in the US, as most people seemed to prefer the sound & the design of the xpipe systems over the regular twin box systems that seem to be mostly used here in the uk? Any ideas on why this is?
For what I'm looking for I think either the Fvd or one of the xpipe designs fit the bill. The xpipe design seems to make the most drama when down shifting , changing gear & hitting the limiter. The 911tuning xpipe exhaust would also remove 14kg from the rear! (Almost made my mind up I think?)
(Markski, if you’re reading this is your 911Tuning exhaust the same one that’s sold on the nineexcellence website here in the UK?)
I hope this helps others in the same dilemma and I look forward to hearing the thoughts & recommendations of other 996 turbo owners that have aftermarket exhaust systems fitted as I'm sure I may have overlooked some that could fit my requirements?.
I think ive almost decided to go for either the 100 cell Speedtech 3”X-cellerator or the 100 cell 911Tuning XRace Pipe.
Has anyone had both of these systems on their TT? As its difficult to hear the difference in their sound when listening to a sound clip. Am I right in thinking that the 911Tuning might be the louder & more dramatic of the two systems?

He is another one with X design... we make various versions for clients depending on the needs.. thus the sound will change a little as well... this one is the loud catless full 3" custom muffler...

Your decision of SpeedTech or 911tuning is a great one. Both are great systems and I have a SpeedTech 3" X-flow cat-less on my personal 996TT. If you concerned about weight go with a cat-less setup plus you will achieve more "crackle & bang" that you desire. My SpeedTech system provides VERY LITTLE, if any, drone over stock but provides a nasty wail when WOT.

Also, you may want to read our testimonials linked here: http://www.speedtechexhausts.com/page4.html - there are some very favorable comments on our 3.0 system by users that have heard most of the others you are considering...
Here is a video link, too - you can fast forward to 53 seconds to hear our 3.0 in action and a cold start during our testing phase 3-1/2 years ago:
Anyhow, let me know if I can be of any assitance. Thanks...

I spent a long time researching the proper exhaust for my car. I ended up going with 911tuning. Mark was excellent to work with and took time to answer my questions. We came up with a setup that was exactly what I wanted.
Here is a picture of my exhaust I installed on my car about 3 weeks ago. I asked Mark to leave the exhaust a natural finish, not fully polished. I chose this option because I honestly do not like "bling" and find the natural steel finish easier to clean with alcohol/cloth.

Also I think you would be better off with an X-pipe if you wanted that sound...
Also you did not say what turbos you had ?...

Thanks for the very helpful info & thoughts so far everyone.
The car is a turbo S so its running the stock k24's with a remap running 1.1bar ( not sure who did the remap) everything else is stock.
For general use i would like to run 100 cell cats but would like a system that i have the option of using de-cat pipes when i fancy it.
I really like the sound of the the EBwerks exhaust but im not sure if its a little too loud? & can it come with 100 cell cats instead of 250 cell? We only need 100 cell to pass the mot (emmisions test) here in england.
So its looking like either the speedtech or 911tuning exhaust... Difficult choice this one
If anyone knows, how would you describe the real world difference in sound between these two systems?
On the videos the speedtech seems to sound a little higher piched than the 911tuning system and the 911 system seems to have a bit more of a deeper growl to it and seems to crackle & pop a little more. Is that a fair comparison with the real world sound?
Thanks again for all the help & input on this very popular topic.

Bought the EBwerks exhaust - to me quite simply it sounds better than my 430 when i had catless tubi installed.
Not much drone at all - and when driven conservatively is pleasant enough, but at 4k rpm onwards it's like the gates of hell open up ....literally. Mine is catless no muffler so with 100 cells would be ideal for you - the price is also very very attractive.
