You cant shift faster then an automatic. Look at all the drag race cars all running powerglides and th 400s. And the winner of one of the porsche shoot outs in a magazine was a tip.

yes, but 6 speed takes more skill and is much more satisfying to master.

Generally, oem automatic transmissions do not shift faster than manual trannys. Auto-manuals such as Ferrari's F1, BMW's SMG, etc... sure. But, not automatics.

And just to ramble a little, at some point, there's gotta be a seperation between technology and driver. I'm sure a computer will eventually be able to lap a car faster than humanly possible... so what.

There will always be a need for automatic transmission cars... be it a 2nd car, commuter car... or perhaps you'd like one in manual and auto. But, having experienced quite a few auto-manuals, I must say, there's nothing more sporting than the satisfaction of banging your own gears.

Just for argument sake...the reason for the choice of automatic is there is less variation (i.e., more predictability). Human control has greater variation...of course this also means at times humans are faster than auto (and times they are slower).

The tiptronic is about .7 seconds slower 0 to 62 mph according to the Porsche brochure. 0 to 100 mph it is 1.4 seconds slower.

I believe that is because Porsche does not torque-brake with the tip and they rev up with the manual. Thus the manual gets a better time.
