Got the 2nd gear pop out, now what?
I had the 2nd gear poping out about 4 times in the last 4000km. I have the detent installed but still had the pop out once or twice with it. Car has around 44,000km and the detent was installed some 2000km ago.
The car has an easy care extended warranty, what should I expect or ask to remedy the problem? What is the "solution" that I should look for?
I got the car to the P-dealer this morning, they had never heard of 2nd gear popping out!? So I'm a bit worried of the possible solutions they are gonna come up with. I brought the car to a Porsche dealer because I expected them to know about the issue and fixing it.

you'll need to replace the 1st and 2nd gears and synchros ( iirc it's the 2nd gear dogring that gets munched ), and unless the re-shim positioning of the eventual gears ( 4th gear placement i think?) on the gear stack is changed, the problem *may* recur, even after all gears are replaced. it happened to me. turns out, that the original oem placement in the 996t trans was found not to be perfectly lined up, so ( i'm told ) they re-shimmed to fix this issue, fighting owners against claims, all the way. i'm no tech guy, but that's as i understand it. sorry to hear you have the issue. it's a ***** when it happens, and once it does, it ain't gonna stop.
also, that gbox detent of course will only help prevent it if it's not yet present. i'm sure that guy eric at gbox will answer any questions you've got on these trans'. good luck.

Anyone here have access to the Porsche TSB?
I'm under warranty with EasyCare and I'm trying to figure out if the cost to repair the tranny wouldn't be that far from a rebuilt tranny from GBox.
I'd rather have a new (rebuilt) gearbox from guys who have done it many times than having a mechanic try to repair my gearbox with mismatch parts for the first time in his life...

if you were under warranty still i'd go into further depth. i'm not sure what your aftermarket warranty provider will say, but they will probably begin with denial/driver contributed failure etc. eg bad shifts caused the weak dogrings/synchro in 2nd to "round" off preventing solid engagement.
you need a rebuild of 1st/2nd gears, and the triple cone synchros and the gear stack needs to be re-positioned with shims, per porsche factory tech docs.
they did it right, the second time in the meantime, keep your hand on the gearshift when going downhill in second gear. woohoo.
sorry it happened, it sucks, and won't get better on its own. too late for the gbox detent also. edit:
just realized i answered this thread with same info twice. drive more, type less! ha sorry.....

jpflip: i've seen the porsche service docs that indicate that shims are needed. i wonder if that was supplemented info as the problem became "known" to porsche or if actual tsb's exist? the real shame in this is that for them to admit they know a problem exists is like pulling teeth. i had to fight *momentarily* with my service advisor ( who answers ultimately to PCNA! ) to get satisfaction and full warrantied no cost repair. it was total BS, for them to act like "2nd gear popout?! huh, wha?!"

Another option as your car has some real power at all revs.. Just forget you have a 2nd gear and go from 1st to 3rd on the way up. On the downshift, stay in 3rd and use your brakes. Corvettes are going from 1st to 4th at light throttle settings ALL THE TIME so you should be fine.

just say "no" to 2nd gear popout... and only engine brake when possible

the ammended porsche docs i saw were on that machine they have in the service bay.. looks like an old microfiche reader lol. all techs have it at their bench at pcar dealers. you know the one. it has to be an ammended doc as they have gone out of their way to say there is/was no issue with 2nd gear in these cars.. until they reversed their position, at least in "some" cases.

That works too.
