How to make a 996TT sound like the new 991 S?
I was just downtown for a photoshoot and the photographer was nice enough to let me drive the new 991 S. Oh my, that car sounds incredible! It truly feels like you're driving an exotic! Good job Porsche!
For those of you that have driven it, any idea what exhaust could get close to that on the 996TT ?
On another side note, the 991 S pulls hard between 5k and 7.5k rpm but definitely doesn't have the torque of the 996TT.
Interior is fantastic though.

It's great but it's impossible to beat that turbo whistle symphony especially with a cat-less exhaust.

Looks like we have a bunch of smartasses this morning
I understand you won't get the same sound but anything sort of like it would be fantastic. Guess I'll have to do my own research; I'm sure you can make this car sound great.

My only restriction is that it needs to be fully smog compliant. CA is a bit of a pain with that stuff.
I'll start making a list and find sound clips. This may have to go under the x-mas tree this year LOL
I'll need to find something that has that euro exotic kinda noise. That 991 was fun to drive even at 20mph just because of the sound!

There are thousands of threads on turbo exhaust sounds...read, listen, then YOU DECIDE WHAT IS 'CLOSE".
IMO, the SOUND is defined by the MECHANICS- think of it as a musical instrument that you tune to highlight the underlying features of the instrument- and making a turbo sound like an NA is like making a flute sounds like a trombone.
Or you can go with the BMW system and have the audio system create the NA sound in your turbo: http://www.gizmag.com/soundracer-v8-video-review/14019/

Record the sound, play through an Ipod and play back through car stereo system while driving.... cheap and effective... change to sound like a Maserati, Ferrari and / or Lambo with the press of a button all of less then 200 bucks. Crazy?... well... you would be a pioneer. Look at Porsche and BMW.. they already start piping sound into the cabin so sound levels outside the car are not increasing as wanted by the aficionado's . Soon, because of sound limitations and regulations, manufacturers won't be able to let you listen to the engine at full bore. You won't have an option unless you get to the track and change the piped right there and then and even there sound limitations start to bite into the fun of having a wailing whale of a time.

Not everything is determined by the engine alone. Different exhausts create different sound. I see it as the same musical instrument but with a different insert . If only the engine would determine the sound, there would be only one manufacturer on the market.

To get exact sound would be difficult to do in a turbo car since the turbo obstruction alters the sound. An example a 996 turbo will never quite sound like a GT3 which has practically the same engine w/o turbos. Try as you might a trombone will never sound like a trumpet. You can get a different flavor of awesome with different tuned exhaust, which then is subjective.

Don't think this will pass the Smog check nor the db limits in California.
