Sorry, this is a **** sandwich. Legally, you will find you're goIng to have little to no recourse unless you can prove this was a material defect purposely hidden or masked from the inspection in an attempt to defraud you.
I'm presuming this was an 'as is' sale with no warranty or guarantee implied or expressed.
If you do decide to go the legal route, a kind judge may take some latitude given the miles but this will be the longest of shots. Conversely, one may conclude given the high state of tune of the car that you jumped behind the wheel and hammered the hell out if as soon as you inked the title.
Sadly, at this juncture you are at the kindness and mercy of the seller. Shoe on the other foot, I would probably offer up to 10-15% of the rebuild cost or assist in the purchase of a replacement motor - whichever is less.

this is not a good place to be but this failure is not something the owner could have forseen at the time of sale and its unlikely that he hid that from you given that a fuel filter is 40$ and is easy to repalce. that fuel kit which i am assuming was a booster 044 setup was probably not installed correctly, proving that would also be tough.
this is why i stay away from stainless lines in the engine bay.

Oh man I cant even imagine how you are feeling. I hope you get it all worked out and I also hope the seller is willing to kick in based on how much over or under you paid based on the market price of your particular highly modified car. Let us know.as you proceed.
#20
That is terrible. I would feel sick. i expect the seller has no legal obligation towards the cost of repair being highly modified and if sold as is. Michigan or Florida may have a consumer statute which deals with implied warranties of fitness or concealing latent defects but as between private parties, i'm not sure, plus it sounds like it was just one of those things that went wrong. Bad situation.

Wow, Sorry to hear man! I would feel horrible as well. To be honest this is exactly why I don't buy modified cars you just never know how good the work is. If I must modify my car I do my own work that way there is only one person to blame.. myself!
I would look into a low mileage engine from a salvage yard and bolt that in

Sucks but the seller doesn't nor should he have any obligation to fix it. I sold a supercharged M3 a few years back and 15 miles away from my house, the new owner money shifted and ripped apart the tranny. I went and picked him up, had the car towed to my tuner and I gave him 500 dollars back because I felt bad (had no reason to do so and I didn't know he money shifted it). My tuner told me what happened and said I was crazy for giving him money. He then called me a week later and asked for more money. I told him to kill himself.
He has no way to know what happened with the car once you drove away.

+1 i would say PM him as i don't think he has log on in the past few days.

Would this be one good reason (compared to many bad ones) to buy through a dealer? At least you could have an extended warranty in place before you left the lot. Would there be any way to put a warranty in place with a private sale BEFORE you take possession of a car? Sounds like tha question might not have applied here given how heavily modded the car is?

thats not entirely true, you can get an aftermarket warranty for a modded car that will cover you, just dont expect it cover failures that are related to the modifications
a guy i know has a fairly lightly modded 996tt (tune, exhaust and some other minor stuff) he had a problem with the engine and they had to remove it and take the damn thing apart to fix it, it was totally covered by his warranty, obviously some companies are better than others

mmmmm nope not true. I had my Audi RS6 modified like crazy and they covered my Transmission rebuild.
#30
I had an E55 AMG and Chrysler Service Contracts covered a new tranny, torque converter, radiator, SC intercooler unit, throttle body and ALOT of other stuff. car was heavily modded and ran 11.3s.
Did they know it was modded - NO
Did they send someone to check -NO
Can they send someone to check - YES
Will they deny when they see mods -YES.
Are all of the above in your extended service agreement - YES.
Sometimes we get lucky and the slip through the system, some others not so much and warranty claims do get denied all the time.
You and I got lucky - I wouldnt say that the norm.
