Looking for the best trans cooler solution for RWD with LSD...

Hello,

I am looking for a good trans cooler for my 996 RWD conversion with LSD. Any recommendations/suggestions?

Thank you,

B

Mine is going in the shop next week for a Guard 40/60 LSD and a transmission cooler set up consisting of an air to liquid cooler, automatic thermostatic switch and an in dash transmission temp gauge readout via the Brockway Dgauge. I'll let you know how it goes.

Is that a kit you are considering or something you got together? OEM GT2 stuff is just over the top expensive when all the parts are added.

I was told for regular driving it will be OK, the min you take it to the track it requires a cooler...

This will be a kit that my shop and I put together. They will most likely put it out in kit form for a 996tt application including all mounts and brackets. We've done quite a bit of R&D on this and it should be pretty slick, very Oem looking. I've looked into the GT2 cooler gearbox conversion but with all the labor involved in machining the box it just did not make sense from a cost standpoint at around $6-7k. The kit we are doing should come in at less than half that including all parts and labor. It will basically be set up for the pump to start circulating fluid when the temp reaches 190 degrees and shut off below 170 or so. We will also employ a gear box temp gauge in the dash. And yes, for track work with and LSD the cooler is a must as the LSD will raise your gearbox fluid temp by about 25 degrees...

Not sure your on off temps are right. I think oil should be kept above 212 degrees to boil off any moisture. Also the cooling system is over taxed at 650-700 crank hp. cup cars make less power and they have way better radiators and thats a N/A car making 400 rwhp tops.

This kit will not be overtaxing the cars cooling system as it is air to liquid versus liquid to liquid and thus totally independent from the car's cooling system. The temp at which the pump starts circulating the oil through the cooler is adjustable to allow for fine tuning. 190F is a starting point chosen after discussions with rebuilders like Copans and others. When the pump starts circulating the oil at 190F doesn't mean the temp will stay at that level. It will most likely climb into the 220-230F range where it will stabilize under hard use but will be kept from going much higher. Bad things start to happen once your oil gets to 250-270F as the syncros start to swell, etc. During continuous freeway driving the gearbox oil temp supposedly reaches 190F or so. The reason I'm adding this is to extract the extra head added with the LSD. For street use though, I wouldn't bother....
