Or just the cam sensor/ harness etc... turn On the diagnostics so you see ALL the codes.. I went over a client for 6 months in Germany with similar issue...
turns out to be a harness problem... car wasn't making power... OR put in a OEM tune and check for codes..

log the car for misfires..

Are you sure you have A30's on it and not A28's? I knew someone had K16/16 and thought that he had K24/18.

Does your shop have the cam plates? If not I have the plates to time them in. If you pay shipping insurance and promise they will be returned as sent I will help you out. I also think it was a cam problem.

only the intake cam is seen by the ecu.

Is it possible the exhaust cams could be causing this? Could that be causing the smoke too?

Cams can do this for sure. You can check the intake cams degrees on the durametric but not the exhaust as there is no sensor on the exhaust cam. Smoke can be a few things.

1) rings. not broken in yet, too loose piston to sleeve, wrong ring type (for iron sleeve or nikki) or damaged ring lands. plug will show oil.

2) Valve seals. worn, torn or excess play valve stem to valve guide
How to tell which valve is leaking? Intake will show on the plug exhaust wont.

3) turbo seals. Well I took those turbos off and check them myself and seen the motor run with them.

Here is a dumb question. Was you tcu flashed?
