Camshaft timing please help...
Hello Porsche enthusiasts!
I am a 996tt owner from Russia, I have the rare IMS gear rattle problem (like, nobody had it here in Porsche Club Russland).
Now, that I had my engine totally ripped in half, everything replaced, new gear (didin't replace the IMS since there was no wear, only there was some metal from the gear stuck to it, we removed it), all new gaskets, piston rings, bearings etc etc.
Now, we are at the point of setting camshaft timing. In Russia dealers do not work on engines, they just send them to Germany, so they cannot help us, nor they posess the timing tool. I took the car to a non-dealership repair-shop, however the tech is really experienced, but he mostly worked on 964 engines before.
As you know, it's different from 964, so he did put the marks on the camshafts to reassemble them exactly as they were, but he says, it would be nice to position them they way they actually *should* be, since the chain might have extended a bit over time.
Now, I have found this somewhere:
996 Turbo M96.70 engine
Inlet opens @ 10 BTDC
Closes @ 20 ABDC
Exh opens @ 41 BBDC
Closes @ 9 BTDC
bear in mind that this is taken a 1mm lift and that the Vario mechanism would be in the fully adavanced position which according to these numbers would be 95 C/L intake and 106 exh
I do understand what BTDC/ABDC stuff is, don't understand the last sentense about "95 C/L intake and 106 exh". I need to explain it to the tech who is Russian speaking. Could anyone please outline the procedure in a more detalied fashion using the above info, please? Like, fix the crankshaft in this position, observe inlet camshaft and set to this angle etc etc. Or, maybe, someone could share camshaft angles relative to some crankshaft position?
Really looking forward to some help from you guys, it's been 2 months w/o the car: 2+2 weeks work, 1 month spare parts wait from Germany...
Thank you!!
p.s. Actually, is it ok if we just set them according to the marks he put on the camshafts, even if the chain is a bit extended, would the variocam mechanism controlled by the ECU take care of that? It should, right, unless it's really way off, but in that case we'd get engine error, right?
