315/25s and pot holes

So I recently got off the phone with a local independent after talking about tires. He told me that I should try to avoid 315/25s for a 19" wheel because the sidewall is too thin to offer any protection against potholes. He basically told me that if I hit one big pot hole with those tires on, I can kiss a wheel goodbye. Any experience/opinions?

all depends on how you drive.
i live in nyc and have had 315 25 19 from 2008-2011.
with the exception of smacking a huge pothole at high speeds, ive never had an issue.
you will be fine. check tire pressure every week.

good luck with that !
if its not gonna be a michelin, don't bother.

go with an OEM 305 tire. michelin, bridgestone. they are just as wide as the 315s.
up your front tires to a 245 35 19 and you are set.
looks better, handles better, grips better, and costs a lot less too.

I can't find replacement Pilot Sport PS2 in 315/25R19 at any retailer. Are these still available? If not, is there a replacement in the same size?

---------------------------------------------------------------------

We apologize the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires in size 315/25zr19 have been discontinued and stock is not available for retailers to order. Unfortunately, we do not have anything else in this size to offer you.

We appreciate your business and thank you for choosing Michelin.

It's kind of ironic how they claim that the tire size is just too unpopular and wouldn't be cost efficient for retail...while there's an entire community of 911 owners who need this specific size

Steve if I plan to lower my car, will I have clearance issues with the 295/30 in the rear and a 225/40 in the front?

+1 But this does not matter anymore as 315/25/19 is not made anymore

My car currently sits on 19's with 315's, and the wheels are out of round due to potholes. I recently bought a set of 18's to eliminate this problem, and to find a more common tire. I see no reason to run a 19, unless you like the looks. IMHO, there is no performance gain to be had, and the ride quality is terrible.

At 150 mph, it feels like I'm driving on a rumble strip.

Jay,
Those should fit just fine without rubbing on a moderately lowered car. You might have to have the rear fender lips rolled but most likely not.

I've got 19" (came with the car) and had both back wheels (3 pc) go out of round. Fortunately with 3pc they are easy (but not cheap) to replace the inner barrels. I borrowed some OEM hollow spoke 18" (same tires) which felt like they handled better (although they don't have the looks factor). Next time I need tires and can't find 315x25x19, I may spring for a set of HRE or Champion one piece forged 18" (lighter, stronger and more selection of less expensive tires).
