Blew my first MAF!

Just cruising along, decided to pass, jumped on it a little and felt a "bump". Got a PSM and ABS failure. A little while later got a CEL.

Dealer checked it out...MAF. I guess the first of many.

I wonder if its the altitude, the EVO intake, the GIAC flash...hummm.

Interestingly, I had exactly the same occurrence today. EVO Intake, ECU Upgrade and exhaust. If this is to be the norm I will most certainly return to stock. The TT "S" has enough power without the mods and throwing CEL's, ABS/PSM warnings is just not worth the aggravation!

You performance guru's need to chime in here.......................

How many miles are on the car? How much gas was in the tank? I blew one out one time on the way back from the track. I had just under an 1/8th in the tank and got on it (there was a Gixxer 750 revving on me) and then hit fuel cut and it went out. I wouldn't say it's the first of many but one thing you could do is upgrade yourself (it's the cheaper one too) to the Boxster 05 MAF and get the dealer to add the upgraded software necessary....

I remember a few months back I saw the new style MAF on a 05 Turbo S that was from a boxster and then on an 03 C4S as well and it made me wonder. The design is slightly different and it has a bit of an angle to it as well...

Alex, Car has 3600 miles on it. Tank was just filled with 93 octane. Temp. was hot...about 90F. I really was not pushing it though! Taking it to dealer next Monday...front diff seal leak, whining sound and now the MAF. This shouldn't be!

Just based on reading about MAF's on this board, for the past month or so I've seen a strong correlation between blown MAF's and the EVO intake. I'm starting to draw conclusions. Someone should start a poll: Of those that have blown a MAF, do you have the EVO intake? I'm not trying to knock the intake, but have just perceived a trend.... Doesn't seem like blown MAF's were as prevalent (even on the big HP cars) before the intakes were as widely distributed.

Hope you get the problem fixed, I could understand how aggrivating it would be... maybe you should look into the boxter MAF that they are talking about

By the way, we are now sort of your neighbors in colorado! We just bought a nice home on 70 acres in Fort Collins

I'm sure it will get fixed, just don't want to have to keep dealing with this!

Welcome to CO. You must become a Buff and Avalanche fan! There are several of us beteween here and Rennlist that are in the area. Mana is in Lone Tree. A group ride might be in order later this summer!

It's hard to diagnose it without being there but any info like that sure does help. Any chance you can also read the codes from the dealer? That'd help... Low signal, high signal etc...

I will say I've always had bad luck with these POS MAF's, before I had any intake etc... I wish there was better quality control at Bosch because some people have never even blown one and have 700HP and 30K on their cars and then others just seem to go out. It's not the best Bosch part ever created that's for sure...

Front diff seal leak won't be hard to fix. Better than when I blew mine up

Alex, Thanks for your response! You're the man. Dealer said it is the MAF for sure. Also said it is not that unusual...replaces 1-2 per year per car in CO.

Nod the altitude likely doesn't help things Those things are so crap I swear they'll stop functioning if you sneeze on them...

sharkster - In my case I had 3/4 tank. Came off the on ramp, nailed it and @ 100mph the engine just shut off for maybe half a sec. Right back on with PSM/ABS lights. Stopped 20 miles later, shut off the engine and upon restart had the CEL.

I am convinced that the EVO Air Box is the issue since PSI maps the ECU for the stock air box with BMC filter. The increased air flow of the Evo simply overwhelms the MAF sensor. I ran my remapped TT "S" hard for 1,200 miles before installing the EVO Air Box without any issue. Changed to the EVo air box and the first time I nail it I have issues. I will be reinstalling the stock air box next week.
