I had both cars this summer as I was babysitting my buddy's 997S that needed a new engine replacement. I was really shocked that it was never a hard choice deciding which to drive. I had to force myself to drive the CS.

Totally weaksauce really. I would get passed by jeep trucks on the highway. The real issue here though is you. You need to take the turbo to the track then see how dumb speeding on the street is. The turbo is such a great performer that there's little you can do on the street that can get your adrenaline going...once you had it on a track a few times.

Sure I commute to work at a nice cruise, but I have an escort 8500 and I'm not driving like an a$$hole. Sometimes I do the same drive in my e36 cab. Same drive, it just takes longer.

I say you should sell you turbo for $40k, buy a 997S for $50 and enjoy it. If you own guns you should trade your .45 for a .22 and sell your .223 and .308 rifles for airguns or better yet, airsoft replicas.

While you're at it, trade your 11 blade scalpel for a wooden tongue depressor and dump out all aspirin or Advil in your medicine cabinet and use a sugar pill instead.

Yes, do less - TRY HARDER!

test drive one and decide for yourself. the tt feels much more planted compare to a C2S. the 997 interior is nicer. otherwise, it's just a difference in hp.

to me, the only reason not to get turbo is gas mileage, service cost, awd vs rwd, and long term engine reliability.

25mpg is what I get on road trips, service isn't that much different other than plugs every couple years which you can do yourself for next to nothing, long term reliability of a TT GT1 derived motor should be equivalent if not better than the NA's.

I completely understand where you are coming from. The TT is really built for speed. It is almost too much for the street. The first time I stepped on it and shifted into 3rd, I noticed I was going 75+ mph?!? The gearing on this car is really tall AND it has the power to still move fast. If it had shorter gearing and 100hp less, it might actually be more fun.

I thought it was going to be an easy choice to sell my SC'd Z3 but it's not. With shorter gearing and a lot less weight, this car is a blast to drive on the street! If we didn't have a lot of great twisty mountain roads out here, I'd honestly sell the TT before I sell the roady.

In short, buy a roadster style car with shorter gearing and you'll have a lot of fun. Or pick up a BMW MZ3 Coupe; the 99-00 models only came with 240hp but they are a blast to drive and surprisingly quick.

I'd buy one for the exhaust note alone; simply amazing!

It's fast in the high rpm but you can definitely feel the torque difference down low. You'll still go way too fast though

The Elise was fast with 300hp. But not oops I'm doing 120mph while I just wanted to pass kinda fast. The turbo is "I'm not even trying to be fast" fast.

Thanks for the suggestion of tracking the car. I'm a former F2000 racer and been instructing for BMWCCA for 6 years. I pledged to not put the Turbo on a track without proper safety equipment (race seats, harness, half cage). And then, the kids can't ride along anymore and the Turbo is turned into a one trick pony...
Then get your self a EBC ( electronic boost controller) you can set the level of boost you get plus how much torque you have as well. So turn the gain down and bring the boost in much higher up the rev band. Then you can floor the throttle low down and pretend you dont have much power. Good EBC £300gbp with rev recognition £400gbp.
Do the maths.

Update

I went to test a C2S today. My salesman at the P dealer wasn't there so no luck.

But I knew there was a 997 C2S convertible at a used car dealer nearby. So I went there...

RANT: I didn't know that used car dealers were that full of crap. At first the salesman (who I later found was the owner) tells me the car is sold and that many people came to see it in the last couple days yada yada. Then look at my car and says, I hope you're not thinking of trading this for mine. Coupe don't sell and if it's not a convertible he's not interested. Then ask about the original price of my car than says it's bull****. They are not worth that (my car has X50). Trying to explain was futile at best.

So he says he won't accept a dime under the asking price on his 997S (because surprise, no it's not sold) and to sell my car myself and to come back some time when I have money. All the while saying my car is a track car and his is a street car and that nobody wants to buy a track car and that my resale value will continue to tank while his S is bound to stay around that price. Long story short, I haven't even had the chance to sit or drive the 997S.

Back to Porsche tomorrow. But this serves as a reminder why so many people hate used car dealers.

Wow, do these people really think any customer will shell out a pile of cash when being treated this way?!
