No back up lights - reverse light switch?
Vehicle: '01 TT
Hi.
I installed a backup camera in my car this weekend and in the process discovered that my backup lights don't work. It seemed like it would be an easy fix until I realized that the switch for the N/A 996's is different than the turbo cars. I've read that that the switch is tied into some part near the gear selector, but I'm not sure what it is I'm looking for. I've also heard that there's a relay that could be the culprit. The issue isn't the B5 fuse (sadly). Can you help me get started on tracking down the issue?
By the way, the camera gets a thumbs up! While the picture clarity isn't quite as good as a factory camera, it works well enough for me. I have an Alpine IWA-D310 headunit.

It sounds like its the backup light switch. It's located on the transmission tail shaft. Its the same part as on the regular 996.

Hmmm.. Pelican said it wasn't, alldata doesn't show it and the little bit I have seen online also seems to suggest otherwise. Is there anything you can point me to that would show my indie that it's the right part? He's been looking at alldata and it doesn't show the part on the trans... Please know that I'm not trying to be a d!ck. Simply trying to sort out conflicting info. I am hopeful that you are the one who is correct!!

By way of an update, it was the switch. A liberal cleaning with electrical contact cleaner and it works like a charm!!! Not only that, but now my mirrors tilt down when in reverse (as they are tied in to the same circuit).
Woohoo!! Now, if only I could get all of these darned check engine light issues resolved.

We found one damaged vac. line and fixed that, but I've gotten a handful of additional codes since then. The car has a new MAF and TB, so it's likely just additional vac. leaks, but I haven't looked carefully to find them and I'm not terribly comfortable pulling stuff off the engine to look.

So far I've gotten a P1072 and 1109. The 1109 came when the turbos were boosting and 1072 came while I was sitting at a traffic light.

Boost leaks are usually found at the intercooler hose connections. The best way to check is to buy or build a boost leak checker and pressurize the turbo inlet on each side with compressed air. If there is a leak, you'll be able to hear it, and trace where it's coming from.
