Does anyone prefer the 996 stock shifter?

I am thinking about going from my 997ssk back to this. My 997ssk just gets very loud and notchy sometimes. What do you guys think about going back to this? Or are there any ways to fix my problems with the 997ssk? Thanks

If I were you, I'd sell your 997SSK (I have that myself) and try the 997 standard shifter before I'd go back to the 996 standard shifter. I've heard the 997 shifter is a very nice improvement over stock as well, and not as aggressive as the 997SSK. Good luck!

Does your 997ssk click or become notchy at all? Have you ever heard of the regular 997 shifter being this way?

No clicking to speak of, but I do know what you mean by the notchiness, which isn't a problem all the time. I'm convinced that the shifter could be adjusted a bit (I installed mine by myself...not convinced it's perfect), but overall I still prefer it a lot over the stock 996TT shifter, which had ridiculously long throws. If I bought any other shifter, it would be the unit from Numeric Racing at this point.

Really..I came from a B+M which was real bad .
The 997 short shifter feels smooth to me after that?..It was dealer installed.
I would never go back to a stock set-up.

stock 996t shifter is an abomination. reminds me of a 65 vw bus. 997 ssk = good. when was the last time you flushed the gear oil?

Well, I had the 30k service about 3k miles ago, so that would be the last time. Is it time for some new oil?

not if you have just changed it. flushing it after only 3k miles is not going to help your "notchy" shifting, but would possibly if it had not been changed recently. many people neglect to change it as often as they should, and symptoms are just that. notchy shifting or difficulty engaging into gear.. esp at startup. was just a thought.
add: are you sure they changed gear oil?? that's not a 30k recommendation.. but again, if you have...if not. redline 90. soon.

+1 997 standard shifter was a big improvement over standard 996 and a bit shorter as well. Fun DIY-

Guess I'm a loner here as I like the 996 shifter. I don't prefer banging gears on the g96 anyway.

I like the 997SS over the 996 shifter anyday. If I was going to change it would be to the Numeric.

I have a B+M now, what do you mean by bad John? The notch-y feel?

I have the 997 OEM (Non-SSK) and think it is a step better than the stock 996 OEM, but not overly notchy or otherwise obtrusive. My 996 TT is a daily driver set up and I like the smooth action. I have tried the B&M and didn't like that....

Enjoy!

I'm convinced the feel of SSks are dependent on installation. I also have the B&M installed properly...no notched feel at all...smooth and perfect....been that way since it was installed (by my indy)...6 years now.
