K16s versus K24s (opinions sought)
#16
Read a similar feedback in multiple threads. My K24's are currently in Bay Area turbo shop having the upgrade done.

k24's lag until they hit their stride at wot. regardless of the gear you're in but hang on when they do hit. 16's run out of juice. so for me ( not knowing how all the other setups compare ) hybrid 16/24's are the best combo of the two for a street car.
instant on boost ( really ) and the top end of a 24. supporting mods are a good idea also. for comparison i've driven stock k16 cars, owned an x50, and currently have the hybrid turbo car. just my experience.

btw this is actual dyno # the shop doesnt tune either of our cars they merely had the dyno in place

Thanks guys, I do appreciate the feedback. It sounds like K24/18G will be a good upgrade path for me as I can keep climbing the ladder for a bit without jumping into the deep end of the pool immediately. As I mentioned I did want to at least back the right horse (K16 versus K24) and the feedback given here has led me to believe that the K24 turbo is the right horse for my current needs.
Wait for the thread next year that sounds something like "OK, I'm bored with K24s, what's next?", right?
I know it's a sickness that never ends.

the shop that layinback and i had the dyno done actualy overlapped outr best runs and surprisingly the k24 spool was only about 500 rpm later than the k16 billets. im going to say the protomotive tune randy has had a lot to do with it. (or the giac tune i have)

it's marked, the difference i remember between the stock x50 and the 16/24's i. albeit the hybrids benefit from the tune. the only way i can describe the k24 stock is like an old two cycle motorbike w/ expansion chamber exhaust that isn't on the pipe until higher revs, bogs for a whole second.. then ... lookout! whereas, i always have power on tap with the old school hybrids throughout the band. i don't know other turbos so i have no comparison. but i can easily see that later technology has helped achieve ( possibly ) higher hp numbers than i have, but again, i figure 475 @wheels is conservative. but at the risk of repeating myself, mine's enough and VERY practical for street and driving conditions i'm in daily since more than half my driving is unobstructed traffic free canyons. the quick spool of the k16 bit is appreciated. i would like to do a side by side comparison of all these other options. who knows, maybe they could be one more thing i could talk myself into needing/wanting. but more power? i'm not ashamed to say. don't need it...hmm, alpha 30's hmmm.. lol

totally believe it! i readily admit my setup is old.. but so am i .. and so's my car

Exactly - it's not at all like a stock K24 car...they are laggy.

Don't forget that you will need Turbo intake pipes with the upgraded turbos(K16\K24, 18G, 20G) which seems to cost quite a bit plus you have to drop the motor a bit to take out the stock pipes that are in there. Turns out the stock pipes are too restrictive. I guess the good new is that I have seen claims of over 40hp gains with that mod!
The most reasonable one I have seen are around 1K and the labor to drop motor and replacing the stock turbo intake pipes with the new ones.

You don't NEED them but they may help depending on the level of the other mods...Do a search and see members opinions that have tryed them at those levels..20g are the only ones that need them right away.
