Which OEM size battery options are there?

[Note: I'll continue to update the below as I find current offerings]

The prior owner put in what appears to be a non-OEM size battery (bracket doesn't secure tightly against it) and I'm now looking to replace it (appears to be 4 yrs old and needs charging often when car sits for ~1 week+.

I've been searching the forums and found some references to some batteries, but most lacked model info / part numbers.

So what is the OEM size? I see references to Group 48, 49, H6, H7, and 94R - which is it?

Advance Auto is the only one to list an OE group: "OE Group H6". I also note that Auto Zone references two different designations: "BCI Designation: 94R" and "EN / DIN Designation: H7/LN4", so perhaps these numbers are not mutually exclusive and refer to more than just the physical size? Looks like 94R=H7 and 48=H6??? Was the OE battery really an H6, which is 10.4-11" in length (depending where you measure)? That seems short for what I was expecting. Now I see that AAP actually lists two: "OE Group H6; OE CCA Rating: 650" and "OE Group H7; OE CCA Rating: 740". And PepBoys lists "OE CCA: 650 - OPTIONAL OE CCA: 740". So perhaps there were two different battery offerings for our cars, or they grouped some other car (other 911?) which had a different size battery? Nonetheless, it seems there's both the H6(=48?)/650CCA and H7(=94R?)/750CCA options.

Looking at the battery tray, I note the bracket has two holes it can fit into for length. They're just shy of 1.5" from each other, and that seems to roughly result in 11" or 12.5" lengths. The tray itself appears to be about 15.5" long, but I don't see how the below PepBoys Group 49 battery that is 14" long would get secured down (???). From the other results, it seems the H6/48 is about 11" and H7/94R is about 12.5", so those make sense, but the PepBoys one does not. There's also two non-threaded holes at each end of the tray. I wonder if a 14" would fit centered between those and require some other bracket to hold it down (thinking of those older style rods with threading on the top for a cross bar to be tightened down) ???

The only part number I saw was mention to:
- Interstate MPT91 - which chain retailers sell this?
The Interstate site quotes "Part # MTP-94R/H7"

Also there were references to a Walmart battery, but no model number given. Looking on their "Battery Finder", for 2004 they don't list the 911. But for 2001-2003 they do, and for engine "H6-3.6", they list:
- Walmart EverStart Maxx-H6 770 CCA - $109 ($99 at my store)
Length: measured center of body at 10 3/8, so bottom width at lip is closer to 11"
Warranty 3yr
- Champion CHAM-H6 770 CCA - $118
Warranty 3yr

AdvanceAutoParts has a promo code DOTW52 that gets $50 off bringing their $166 battery down to $116, minus $25 rebate = $91 which is what began my search for a replacement tonight (deal ends tonight). Their, they site returns a match of:
- AutoCraft Gold Battery, Group Size 94R, 730 CCA - $166 (-$50 code, -$25 rebate)
However, I note on their website the title of the battery (as pasted above) lists "730 CCA". Then under Product Applications, it says:
"2002 Porsche 911 Turbo:
790 CCA; OE Group H7; OE CCA Rating: 740; Battery is vented to outside of vehicle.; Installation may take up to 30 minutes. Battery located under hood by firewall."
Then clicking on Specifications it says "Cold Cranking Amps:765 amps"
So which is it? 730, 790, or 765? Make up your mind AdvanceAuto!
It also lists "Length:12 7/16 in"

AAP also lists a 2nd battery also as "exact fit":
- AutoCraft Gold Battery, Group Size 48, 730 CCA - $135 -$50 Code = $85 -$25 MIR = $60
This one, unlike the first one, is consistent with it's CCA reporting. Title says 730. Product Applications says:
"2002 Porsche 911 Turbo:
730 CCA; OE Group H6; OE CCA Rating: 650; Battery is vented to outside of vehicle.; Installation may take up to 30 minutes. Battery located under hood by firewall."
And Specifications tab says: "Cold Cranking Amps:730 amps"
Other specs listed as: "Length:11 in" and "Weight:41 lbs"

Both AAP AutoCraft Gold batteries have 3yr/7yr warranty.

Sears website search again shows no match when I put in 2004, but if I put 2001, 2002, 2003, and even 2005, then the following battery is returned for "911 Series" -> "6-3600 3.6L DOHC". Is there a reason why 2004 is not returning matches? Was something specified different for that year? Here's the one that was returned for the other years:
- DieHard Gold Automotive Battery - Group Size H6/48, 730 CCA - $149 -> $144 sale
Item Weight (lbs.): 40.0
Length (in.): 10.4
Warranty: 3yr/8.3yr (100 months)

PepBoys:
Bosch Premium Performance Battery Part # 49-850B SKU:9073755
$108, -$20 coupon ($20off$100) = $88. Also a $20 MIR, but may not work with coupon
Notes
Bosch 36/96 Month Battery
850CCA/1000CA - RESERVE MIN = 120 OE CCA: 650 - OPTIONAL OE CCA: 740 BATTERY IS VENTED OUTSIDE OF VEHICLE
Group Size 49
Length (in.) 14.02 <--- I don't see how this one could fit and be secured down
Weight (lbs) 44.8

AutoZone:
Two different batteries returned from their site search (2004 Porsche 911 AWD 3.6L Turbo DOHC 6cyl)

- Duralast Platinum/Battery, Part Number: H7-AGM - $189 (maybe 20%off code)
800 CCA
Warranty 3yr
Weight: 51.5 lbs
Battery Length: 12 7/16 in
BCI Designation: 94R
EN / DIN Designation: H7/LN4

Duralast Gold/Battery, Part Number: 94R-DLG - $164 (maybe 20%off code)
790 CCA
Warranty 3yr/8yr
Weight: 47.41 lbs
Battery Length: 12 7/16 in
BCI Designation: 94R
EN / DIN Designation: H7/LN4

Mention of Costco as well - which model there?
- Costco P/N???

Others?

Thanks,
Mark

Thanks, yeah I saw that one in several threads, but I'm just looking for a simple OEM-size direct replacement (implied good price and good performance/warranty).

*Which* one? I'm looking for specific model numbers to avoid the ambiguity I found in past threads. Thanks.

the thing to consider is this complete kit isnt much more than a replacement battery and shaves about 20 lbs off the front which is free hp.

I had the smaller battery, and although it was fairly good, it took nothing in cold weather to die. Switched to the "full" size, and the modest weight gain is worth the security for a dd. My cold weather is probably a bit extreme compared to others. Irony, I put it away for the winter!

I'll disagree on the pricing. It's 2x-3x more than the batteries I mentioned ($280 vs $91-$145). I consider that "much more".

Thanks - I've heard some similar stories from others as well. My concern is not so much the cold (it's in the garage in NC), but rather that I typically drive it about 1-2 times a week, and it's not uncommon to go 1-2 weeks without driving it. I've considered a battery tender type device, but feel I need to address the battery first (it's now 4 yrs old and often needs a recharge after some of those 1-2 weeks sitting).

Completely off thread, but I'm always amazed at the text algorithms and logic of websites these days. We are talking about batteries in this thread, and lo and behold, the banner ads are about batteries. If I add the word transmission into this thread, will it switch to trannys?!

Ha, and I often forget I have "Adblock Plus" Add-on enabled such that I don't see any of that http://adblockplus.org/en/

Wait 6 months, I'll give you my OEM battery :-) I've been wanting to swap in my PC925 but the car sits for 8 months out of the year so I haven't bothered.
